Today a small bug-fix update went out for Proton Experimental, as Valve continues readying it up ahead of the launch of their handheld Steam Deck. What is Proton? It's a compatibility layer designed to run Windows games from Steam on Linux. See more about it in our full guide.

For the update today 13/01/2022 here what's been adjusted:

- Fix hang on exit in Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous.
- Fix Doom Eternal's multiplayer.
- Fix Sea of Thieves' voice chat.
- Fix Disgaea PC showing black window after losing focus on Gnome.
- Fix map scrolling getting stuck after Alt+Tab in Age of Empires games.

See the Proton Experimental changelog to see all the current differences to the normal Proton releases.

Need to know how to actually use Proton Experimental? Here's a simple HOWTO (as it's not complicated!). Make sure it's installed by searching for it in your Steam Library, then select it from the Compatibility menu in the Properties section of a game. See our quick video below:

For an explainer in text form:

  1. Search for Proton Experimental and install if not already.
  2. Right click any game on Steam and go to Properties.
  3. Select the Compatibility menu on the right side.
  4. Ensure the "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" is ticked.
  5. From the dropdown box that appears select Proton Experimental.

January 13th will forever be a holiday to me. I've played 1200 hours of Sea of Thieves on Linux.

Edit: It works!

That's a big one for me, too! I always play SoT on Windows because of two reasons:
1. Voice Chat not working on Linux
2. I cannot connect to the session of Windows Store Versions

To be fair, I normally don't play with randoms, so Voice Chat isn't that important for me. But connecting to a Windows Store Session is, because my SO plays with this version and I have yet to find a solution to accept an invitation sent over the Windows Game Overlay

Do I understand that correctly, you would like to have voice chat with foreigners?
I basically gave up online gaming at least a decade ago due to seeing written chat of all those random foreigners...

Yes and No. Sea of Thieves is a PVP and PVE game. That's the one thing I hate about it, even though I must admit, that it gives the game something of a thrill to never know, if someone attacks you, or not.

But I agree with you. I don't want to voice chat with other randoms, but since this game or more or less build around this feature, it's (more or less) important.

And I also must admit, that most of the voice chats I had in this game are kids that harass someone (mostly with a really bad microphone), but I also had a few encounters with very friendly players.

It's as always. I don't want to have voice chat. But I want to have the possibility, when it's given.

I hope my explanations make sense in any way ^^

Isn't PVP basically broken in this game? If Steam forums and many reviews are any indication, the game's community is pretty toxic with people just bullying weaker players and lot of griefing, spawn killing, etc., because the game allows for that type of play and time wasting. All of that being excused by the part of that community that is doing it as "part of the game", "realistic pirating" or just "suck it up", while actively disagreeing with any needs for fixing glaring problems that allow for all of that.

Is it possible to switch off the PVP part?

And, could I play with Windows friends?

Unfortunately you cannot switch off the PVP Part.

And I haven't found a way (yet) to play with my Windows Friends (Windows Game Store), if there is no one who plays the bridge between Steam (Windows) and Windows Game Store.

I was quite interested in this game, but didn't realise it had a PvP element. Absolutely no interest in it now, especially if the PvP can't be disabled. I can't think of a single game, in gaming history, that has both PvE and PvP elements mixed seamlessly that isn't lesser for it. The devs will always focus on one or the other, or the simple fact that they both exist will cause one or the other to be less interesting, or more frustrating.

It's like developers saw the original Diablo, realised that everyone hated PvP player damage in what was obviously a PvE game and have spent the last two decades maximising that suffering to the fullest extent possible. Baffling.

This is absolutely understandable for me. I would love to have PvE Servers for Sea of Thieves. Because for me, the game loop it presents is really enjoyable. But as everyone said (and I think that confirms more or less the toxicity that Solitory mentioned), I think PvP will be dead, if everyone can play PvE only.

For me it's absolutely understandable that someone won't play the game because of the PvP elements. As I said, I hate them, too. Sea of Thieves would be a nearly perfect game for me, if it were PvE only. ^^
