Today a small bug-fix update went out for Proton Experimental, as Valve continues readying it up ahead of the launch of their handheld Steam Deck. What is Proton? It's a compatibility layer designed to run Windows games from Steam on Linux. See more about it in our full guide.

For the update today 13/01/2022 here what's been adjusted:

- Fix hang on exit in Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous.
- Fix Doom Eternal's multiplayer.
- Fix Sea of Thieves' voice chat.
- Fix Disgaea PC showing black window after losing focus on Gnome.
- Fix map scrolling getting stuck after Alt+Tab in Age of Empires games.

See the Proton Experimental changelog to see all the current differences to the normal Proton releases.

Need to know how to actually use Proton Experimental? Here's a simple HOWTO (as it's not complicated!). Make sure it's installed by searching for it in your Steam Library, then select it from the Compatibility menu in the Properties section of a game. See our quick video below:

For an explainer in text form:

  1. Search for Proton Experimental and install if not already.
  2. Right click any game on Steam and go to Properties.
  3. Select the Compatibility menu on the right side.
  4. Ensure the "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" is ticked.
  5. From the dropdown box that appears select Proton Experimental.

Quoting: The_LuxAnd I haven't found a way (yet) to play with my Windows Friends (Windows Game Store), if there is no one who plays the bridge between Steam (Windows) and Windows Game Store.

Wait what? I play with my brother all the time. He plays the MS Store version on Windows.

All we have to do is use the in-game invite system.

Edit 2: You can sometimes get the "Locating fresh supplies..." timeout when joining them but the next time will work. (Just have them re-invite you or attempt to rejoin your previous session if the game gives you that option).

Edit: While I would love a PvE mode in SoT...it just wouldn't be SoT then. Nothing can describe the rush that this game gives me and that's largely due to the ever present danger. Sometimes I do want to relax however, and Sea of Thieves is NOT a game for that if I want to do well.

Uuuuh, really? I must admit, I never tried that. I only tried to invite someone via Steam or asked myself how the eff I can invite someone from Windows Store. I will definitely check this! Thanks for the idea! :-D

Yes! Launches and works great here on radv.

A bit of stuttering as DXVK works its magic as expected.

Someone posted a video stating God of War is running 10% FASTER via Linux/Proton!

Can't wait to get home now!
