Readying up for the onslaught of users on the Steam Deck who will probably want to play some of their Epic Store loot, the free and open source Heroic Games Launcher has a new bug fix release up.

An application that has only become more important with the Steam Deck, since it ships with Linux and Epic Games don't support Linux with their store. This at least gives Linux desktop gamers and Steam Deck users a really easy way to get all their games in one place.

Some of what's new and improved in Heroic 2.1.1 includes:

  • An updated general settings page
  • An easy way to view a full log file for each game
  • Epic Services online status check is fixed up
  • The Wine manager got updated with a progress bar and it can be aborted
  • DXVK/VKD3D installation was fixed
  • + Other bug fixes

Quite a small release, as a much bigger and more exciting feature-release is coming up with Heroic 2.2 with GOG store integration. They're also working on Flatpak support too! In the last major update, Heroic added gamepad support to the UI including an on-screen keyboard so it's looking great.

I wonder if Epic will either adapt this project, or if they wanna come up with their own Linux or better Steam Deck native version of their launcher. Tim Sweeney was very exited about the openness of the Deck as it's a PC. And seeing the effort Valve and Epic put into the support for EAC, there is definitely some interest from Epic in the Deck. I can't imagine they expect people to install Windows to play games from the EGS, so if Epic officially wants their games on the Deck... some official support has to arrive.

Only 18 days left... *fingerscrossed*

Why would epic do that?
As long as enthusiasts do it for free they save money.
The important part I think is the community that needs to support the developer team, with money, game keys, good bug reports and appreciation.
That is more sustainable than epic buying them and ruining the open source multi store approach.

Tim Sweeney's comments came about at a time when he was battling apple for the right to distribute software in places other than the App Store. I don't think he cares about linux tbh.

perhaps unpopular opinion: Heroic is currently the best of the Linux community game managers. It did it for me in a way that Lutris has not. I've been using Heroic for a few freebie games from EGS and the experience has been as smooth as with Steam+Proton, with a cleaner UI.

Did you notice the lack of original binaries used in the background or what exactly is it?

My launcher of choice in terms of design and features is the galaxy client at the moment.

Epic should just use this as the official one for Linux. Pour some money into it; integrate whatever is missing.

Not at all. I appreciate the work that went into Lutris, but it's clunky AF. I love how simple and user friendly Heroic is. It's so polished that if I did not know otherwise, I'd think it's the official Epic client for Linux. Flavio should really apply for an Epic grant. I mean, even has features that the original Epic launcher doesn't have, like adding an already installed game to the library. The official solution offered by Epic for their launcher is equal parts pathetic and depressing. Anyway, with Herois the Epic store is a completely viable place to buy games, even on Linux. While, I haven't tested is that extensively, the only game that did work out of the box for me was the Epic version of Salt & Sactuary (got the freebie), which seems to be a pita to run via Wine. If I ever get to playing it, I'll probably just boot up Windows or buy the Linux version of Steam.

PS If they manage to integrate GOG in a way I can run the Windows versions of games to get my cloud saves and achievements, this will officially be the best launcher in history :)

Right. He cares about money. If he thinks there's money to be made with the Steam Deck, he'll probably consider supporting it. He'd probably consider supporting a toaster if it could make him some cash.

Thanks! :)

So, I had applied for the mega grant about 6 months ago since some people were asking me to do since Heroic is doing a favor to Epic, especially now with the Steam deck. And this was one of the arguments I used during the application.

Still, last week I got a big NO from them and they didn't say the reason.
To be honest this was expected and I never believe we could get it.

Like Rodney from Legendary said: at least they did not answer with a lawsuit. ahahahaha

About GOG: windows games are already working, we are just missing the native games now and getting updates for the games, but this is working on.
Cloud saves might be possible in the future, not on the first implementation though.
