The dedicated team building up the Windows compatibility layer Wine have release a new development version with Wine 7.2 now available. This is the compatibility layer that allows you to run games and applications developed for Windows - on Linux (plus also macOS and BSD). It's a major part of what makes up Steam Play Proton. Once a year or so, a new stable release is made.

Here's the highlights of the release:

  •   Large scale cleanup to support 'long' type with MSVCRT.
  •   Mono engine updated to version 7.1.1.
  •   More theming fixes in common controls.
  •   Beginnings of a WMA decoder.
  •   Support for 64-bit time_t.
  •   Various bug fixes.

As per usual the bug fixes are a big assorted bunch, since Wine has to fix up compatibility with a never ending amount of Windows applications and games from a great many years ago to modern stuff. This time only 23 were tagged as fixed as of this release including issues with Half-Life (CD version), Call of Juarez and other miscellaneous applications.

No new issue of World Wine News as of yet though, it will probably come along later with a little more info into recent ongoings in Wine land.

Amazing, many games depend on this, especially games that are DX9, like RE0, 1, RE Revelation 2 and among other games I have.

Beginnings of a WMA decoder.
The only thing better than this are games that don't use it at all, very nice!

Beginnings of a WMA decoder.

With this all games that uses Media Player to run a video playback in the game could run without tweaks?
Like Resident Evil 5 or Catherine Classic?

I would figure. And if it's happening now, I suspect Valve probably has some involvement, so I expect it's probably something done with an eye to legality, meaning if they can get it working, Proton would be able to use it all official-like.
That said, "Beginnings of".

Those games need a tweak, the problem is that in the current versions of Proton, after version 5.13, you can not install WMP11 through Protontricks, it gives you permission error, you need to use version 5.0-10 to install WMP11 and thus be able to run the games that require it, such as RE0 or RE1, it's something that's problematic and annoying to do.

There is a fork of the script here https://github.com/HoodedDeath/mf-fix that works for Proton past 5.13

I also see that the original script https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-installcab have a patch since 2021 https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-installcab/pull/36 that claims to work for newer protons as well, not tested that one though.

That's cool, isn't this what stopping Persona 4 from getting Playable on Steam Verified? I hope we'll never have to encounter codec issues anymore soon, because that's been a PAINFUL issue for me as someone who plays a lot of Japanese games old and new (I've needed at least three wineprefix just to account for those).

WMA = Windows Media Audio, so I wouldn't count on this helping with video playback (that would be WMV).

Couldn't Wine use ffmpeg for that? It could handle WMA and WMV for a long time already.

If I have video playback issues, I use Proton-GE: https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom/releases

This implements a specific Windows API, which in turn uses GStreamer, which in turn most likely will use ffmpeg on most systems.
