Linux Mint Debian Edition 5 has been released, giving you a stable Debian base with all the niceties that comes from the Mint team. The point of this distribution for the Mint team, is to provide a sort-of safety net if Ubuntu was to vanish on them, since the main Linux Mint distribution is based upon Ubuntu, which itself is based on Debian directly.

The release notes aren't particularly long or interesting, and don't actually go over any fun new features, it's mainly just a list of issues you might encounter. It does jump from using Debian Buster (version 10) to Debian Bullseye (version 11) though, so you get a ton of overall package updates.

Still wondering when the Mint team has had enough of Canonicals canonicalisms and instead adopt LMDE as the real/only Linux Mint version. To name just one example, LMDE packages Chromium now since Canonicals betrayal with the snap-deb.

I didn't switch to LMDE just because I like a lot MATE environment, but it's not available for LMDE (and I don't like to install it over, I prefer to have a "clean install").

It's interesting to think that the split was with Gnome-Shell, one went with the Gnome 2 / GTK2 and one with with Gnome 2 / GTK3 (I can't ever remember which is which between MATE and Cinnamon). But now aren't they both moving (eventually) to GTK4? Pretty sure they're both GTK3 now. But they still have a different 'feel' to each other as they seem to favor one set up or the other.
(for note, I just stuck with gnome).

Anyway - the point was that the Mint team had to start building Chromium themselves. With Canonical going all in on snaps, the Mint team saying hard no to snaps, the possibility of future snap-deb shenanigans and headaches... maybe time to cut out Ubuntu as the middle man.
Side note, for a while around the same time period, Debian was also having issues with Chromium and I pinched the updated builds from LMDE for my Siduction machines. :) The Debian Chromium Team is fairly on the ball these days though. In any case I've nearly completely transitioned to Firefox now.

Yes, I suspect the LMDE hedge is less about Ubuntu maybe going away than Canonical finally crawling so far up its own you-know-what that using Ubuntu as a base becomes untenable. The Register has a timely article this morning on how that process continues apace.
