Yes it's true, Gabe Newell of Valve really did go around delivering a Steam Deck to various people and now there's an official video on it. I'm not jealous at all.

Check it out below:

A fun bit of marketing but it goes to show how close Valve's co-founder is to the project as a whole. It's quite wholesome to see really and shows Newell's clear passion for the Steam Deck and Valve as a whole. Not only that, I think it goes to show how important the Steam Deck is for the future of Valve too.

Hopefully by the end of the month we shall see a lot more people have their unit in hand, so we can have more gamers on Deck.

I love how Gabe says he works at Valve, not that he's the CEO. I feel like Valve is a nice place to work if the founder considers himself on the same level as the rest of the employees. Overall very cool of him to do this.

Imagine their expression when Gaben comes to their place of residences and hands off Steam Decks

From the legend himself!

I know it's a publicity stunt. But, it still says something. I mean, at most companies it would never occur to them that the CEO doing something like that for publicity could possibly be an option. There's something grounded about the style of Valve in general and Gabe in particular that allows for that kind of idea.

(For that matter, if the CEOs of most companies did pull a stunt like that, nobody would care. A couple of exceptions, sure--they'd have cared if Steve Jobs went around personally delivering iPhones. But he wouldn't have done it, and the current guy? Nobody cares who he is)

Awesome video.
Just something I noted some of the guys/gals, didn't know who Gaben even was
What I took away from that was, they put those in the video. There's some humility in the approach there. They could totally have left out anyone who wasn't worshipping the ground Gabe walked on, but they put them in. Classy.

Awesome video.
Just something I noted some of the guys/gals, didn't know who Gaben even was, that people don't seem like "tech" people. Probably they are gonna use Steam Deck as it is and not switch the OS.

Apparently one of them was a wife of a guy who had gone skiing: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/t2fmg0/gaben_showed_up_at_my_house_and_delivered_my/hylsx25/

Now that's pretty cool. I hope he enjoyed it, too.

Imagine the getting home from work to the conversation that starts "So this fat old guy with a camera crew dropped off a package for you?"

Secondly (a little rant about car safety you can skip) - in the car ( eg. at https://youtu.be/9Dy-KWjp-m0?t=216 ) He is not wearing a seat belt which is bad, but how on earth did she manage to put on the seat belt that wrong? if the car crashes she will break her neck on the seat in front of her. A 3 point seat belt is NOT meant to be worn like that, your better off not using it than using it wrong :|

When i saw that part in the video i just thought "i would bite my ass if i was THAT guy" xD

A massive amount of games got added yesterday as Unsupported in deck verified. Not sure what's up there. It's almost like they are going after those specifically. A lot of them are games that do actually work in Proton.

I'll tease in this message because I place high Liam's value, and the good direction linux gaming is taking thank to this Steam Deck.

That's pure communication. Like war propaganda on every side across Europe currently: it's made to forge a legend out of nothing, a bard's tale (Jasper?), to force one's view/storytelling (Gabe = the cool, legendary guy, that take care of customers) into population minds. Either it is true, and we don't need this simulacrum; Or its false, and he need this simulacrum.

Ok, why not, even doing a article on that, but it's not an information. Moreover, Gabe won't be delivering deck into indonesia, honduras or Ouganda, while claiming that's a way for obtaining a true "return" of customers: ....he means English-speaking, US citizen centered opinion ; So, again, pure communication, everything in this video is artificial; even not showing him walking (with difficulties). In short, pure marketing, zero information.

He wants to take into account for ALL customers? Let's do a public videoconference meeting with low moderation, nothing like Agoras since Athenian early democracy for a truly-horizontal discussion and egalitarian exchange of vision and ideas.

Fortunately, Liam wrote "A fun bit of marketing but..." ... But this 'But' immediately closed the critical mind, the necessary writing distance between the fanboy fuelled by marketing and the journalist :(

And finally, to Liam: you are procrastinating with this middling article :D. We ask for more review of this machine please ;) Hardware change of ssd for example, how it behaves in office tasks, video watching, etc. All stupid question like : can I play or watch video in the bed while my half is sleeping (fan sound, click of the buttons, etc.)? <3

I've literally no idea what you're trying to say at this point. It's a very quick news tip, to show the video and not really anything more than that. Nothing about what I've written here is in any way "fanboy" and I'm as far as you can get from a Valve fanboy and have been very critical of them in the past.

Certainly true. However,
Either it is true, and we don't need this simulacrum; Or its false, and he need this simulacrum.
Well, no. In this day and age, in fact perhaps always, the truth doesn't just insinuate itself into our minds without help. Even if it's true (or more likely, partially true) we still need "simulacra" of it.

Moreover, Gabe won't be delivering deck into indonesia, honduras or Ouganda
Well, no. He lives in Seattle. The only claim this whole thing has to some kind of naturalistic authenticity is that he decided to just go and do some deliveries where he lives.
There's a lot of imperialism behind the fact that big global companies are often headquartered in Seattle and never in Indonesia, Honduras or Uganda. But once that's the case, it would just be stupid tokenism to pull stunts in such countries, like Bill Clinton "feeling your pain".

From Twitter:
1- This was Gabe’s idea. I thought he was nuts.
2- But I/we all miss interacting with people/customers so I am so glad we did it!
3- We picked random Q1 reservation holders nearby. To make sure they’d be home, I told them they had to be home to “sign for delivery”.
