A sad day for preservation and emulation, as SEGA has announced that they will be delisting the classic Sonic games.

Why? Well, they have Sonic Origins coming out on June 23. So they will be delisting Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic CD on May 20. If that alarms you, then you might want to grab them from the SEGA Mega Drive and Genesis Classics collection (you can buy them individually). That whole collection supports Linux too, and comes with roms, which it appears Sonic Origins will not (on both counts).

The full press release:

SEGA announced today that the company will delist the digital versions of the stand-alone titles that will be featured in the upcoming game, Sonic Origins on May 20, 2022.

This will include Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic CD. There are a couple of exceptions - Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2 will remain available via SEGA AGES on the Nintendo Switch and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will still be playable via Sega Genesis on Nintendo Switch Online +.

Delisting means no new purchases but existing owners will continue to have access.

It doesn't help that Sonic Origins has a stupid confusing DLC policy mess, just look at this. What have they done to Sonic?

Publisher Devolver Digital were quick to make a good joke about it.

Currently waiting on a little more info from SEGA PR, will update if / when they reply.

Sega lived long enough to see themselves become the bad guy. Screw you Sega for this nonsense. "Character Animation in the Menu" WTF is that BS. I hope no one gives them a cent until they fix this garbage.

Hello,

Give Sonic Time Twisted a whirl if you haven't already: https://www.indiedb.com/games/sonic-time-twisted

I stumbled upon this a couple of weeks ago while randomly browsing indiedb and was very surprised I've not heard about it before. It's very good! Don't think GOL has done an article about it before; this game needs some exposure now considering this news from Sega.

Enjoy!

Edit: Although the indiedb page says Windows only, there is a Linux download in the Files section. It's 32bit though, so if you are running 64bit only...you'll need to install some 32bit libs to play. Worked for me in OpenSUSE Leap 15.4 beta

I remember when DOT EMU use to have ROMs for sale on their site. I still have the ones they let go for free years back. Sonic is not my jam but I do love some old school fighting game roms from the console era of Mega Drive time.

It's a little tempting to snatch them up…but I keep reminding myself that I was never into the Sonic franchise, even back when there were pay phones on every corner. Where's the old-moji? lol

From including the original ROMs to having Denuvo DRM 🤡🤡🤡 <-- (Sega)

Haven't heard of this before today. I was initially interested until I saw the price. Maybe if it were $15-$20, I would consider it, but $40 for the base game is a hard no for me.

It's really a shame since I think the original Sonic games are absolutely incredible (especially Sonic CD). I suppose this will be compelling for some people, but I'm not going to pay that much for old games I already have.

As an aside, I think it's wild that Sonic 1 is thirty years old and still hasn't hit the public domain (and probably won't for another 200 years).

sigh
by the time i get enough money for an new computer + games, i probably wont want to give those companies any cent anymore...
