Psychonauts 2 was originally crowdfunded via Fig back in 2016, and now near a year after the Windows release the Native Linux version is now available. This comes along with an update that added more languages and fixed an issue with the Strike City checkpoint at the end of the level.

In the notes, they mentioned this about the Linux port:

The game may crash at launch or when attempting to alter Display settings such as Window Mode. Please try the following troubleshooting solutions:

  • Use alternate display drivers, found in Software & Updates > Additional Drivers
  • Go to Settings > Appearance and reposition the Activities bar to the bottom of the screen
  • Use an alternate desktop environment (DE) such as Gnome on X.Org or Ubuntu on Wayland
  • Try changing the resolution with the "Resolution Scaling" slider found in the Settings > Graphics menu

Some pretty strange advice but that's what they said…

Well, I couldn't resist and bought it after hearing that the port runs great. 😅
I've only played through the first/training mission, and so far the game is a blast and runs really well (after deactivating vsync). 😄

So, trying this on an RTX 3060 laptop. FPS limit set to "unlimited", yet I only had 55-60 fps with 35% GPU usage.
Then I disabled V-sync and it's now at 170 FPS. I have a 144Hz monitor so I guess V-sync got the wrong impression about how many FPS it should push out. Ultimately went from "meh port" to "ok, this runs good".

All native Linuxgames based on the Unrealengine seem to behave strange on high refreshrate displays. Splitgate and Hypercharge Unboxed are two other examples where V-Sync is cutting down the FPS to 60 instead of syncing to the actual refreshrate of my display which is running at 144Hz. In Hypercharged Unboxed using V-Sync also introduces screentearing. I went with the framelimiter in both games instead of using V-Sync.

I am assuming it is just the verification process on GOG.com slowing things down as usual, but just in case I decided to check what Humble Store was offering:

How exactly is one supposed to parse this platform list? It's internally inconsistent.

And yep, GOG.com has all three versions up now.

The Native build is pointless. It does not offer Fullscreen play or any resolution adjustments. It also gives a blackbar at the bottom of the screen. Proton functions perfectly.

I truly, genuinely do not understand at all why they bothered with a Linux port just to completely half-arse it.

Huh that's strange, I don't have a black bar on the bottom of the screen on either of my systems (Intel, nvidia or AMD). But I use Gnome on all of them. Maybe the game has a problem with KDE?

But yeah, it's strange that they don't offer real fullscreen (only borderless and window), but I'm not sure if that happened with the latest update or if the release version also already had that issue.

Is there a good use case for exclusive full screen these days besides working around DE/compositor quirks? I tend to always pick borderless window if it's available. I haven't seen a downside yet on my system.

Frankly, I can't think of one, quite the opposite to be honest. I can remember back in the day (2005-2010) it was way worse than nowadays, because games would pretty much always change the resolution of the screen, alt-tab was not possible, when the game crashed the screen resolution stayed at the wrong resolution, etc. Back in the day I used to launch games in their own X11 session/server because of these issues.

Borderless fullscreen windows pretty much fixed all of these issues and I can't think of a game where I don't use borderless when it's available.

It's only strange in the case of this game, because they mention exclusive fullscreen in the options, but it's not available.

Yeah I remember the old days as well. That's why I qualified my question with "these days".

Sounds strange indeed.
