Wine is the compatibility layer that allows you to run games and applications developed for Windows - on Linux (plus also macOS and BSD). A new biweekly development release is out now with Wine 7.9. It's a major part of what makes up Steam Play Proton and enables a ton of games to work on the Steam Deck. Once a year or so, a new stable release is made.
Release Highlights:
- Preliminary work towards PE conversion of macOS driver.
- A number of fixes for test failures on Windows.
- Various bug fixes.
With this release 35 bugs were listed as solved like issues for: Stellaris launcher, Cxbx Reloaded, Lego Rock Raiders and various other miscellaneous issues affecting all sorts.
If you're looking for help managing Wine, either on a Linux desktop or your fancy Steam Deck, do go and take a look over at Bottles. Really awesome software that helps deal with it all! Bottles can help you set up other launchers like Epic Store, Ubisoft Connect, GOG Galaxy and more.
Wine only get updates in proton after stable releases...
Stellaris launcher
but Steam still using wine 7.0.And yesterday I was trying to figure out why Paradox launcher was perfectly fine on Wine Staging but blackscreened on Proton 7+.
What Paradox games require you to use the Windows version in the first place?Stellaris launcherbut Steam still using wine 7.0.And yesterday I was trying to figure out why Paradox launcher was perfectly fine on Wine Staging but blackscreened on Proton 7+.
Yes yes... but Steam still using wine 7.0.
While that's true, doesn't it have custom patches which are not available in more recent Wine releases?
What Paradox games require you to use the Windows version in the first place?HoI 4. Linux Native was fine except some problems with optimus until I loaded this mod and game crashed when starting round after country selection. Mod works fine on Windows, MacOS and Linux+Proton but not native. It was working 3-4 months ago.
I have to stick to Proton now because the problems with optimus are just unresolvable if I use an older version of HoI 4 and launcher starts rendering once I resize it on Proton.
