Dead Cells is a great game. Not only does it look great but the action is awesome. However, it is rather difficult and for some nearly impossible so the developers have put out a huge free upgrade to help more people play it.

A rather admirable update really, as accessibility should never be looked down upon and during their testing the developer said they received "pretty much zero negative feedback on the general options that we're introducing". However their new Assist Mode that gives multiple lives, auto-hitting and adjustable trap damage did receive community "pushback". Addressing that in an update they made it clear the whole point is to "let people to enjoy the game who would otherwise be excluded from doing so" and it's entirely optional.

Highlights include:

  • Loads of new options to improve accessibility, such as adjustable font type & size, input customisation and individual adjustment of sound effect volumes
  • Assist Mode including customisation of enemy health/damage, trap speed/damage and parry window. Plus options for multiple lives, auto-hit with primary weapon & full map reveal
  • Big reduction in cell cost of early-game weapons
  • 7 weapon reworks

Quoting: TermyYou argue that having shortcuts in the game devalues your achievements. That is only true though if you somehow are compulsively forced to go the easy route.
Just because this options exist doesn't mean you have to or even SHOULD take them if you don't have some kind of impairment. So nothing is taken away from you.
That is false.
I explained what is indeed "taken away" from people by options even if they are not using these options.
You either did not read, understand or chose to ignore what I wrote before.
As I'm not in the habit of repeating myself, I'll leave you to your bliss.

I just have to say that this is the possibly the game that gave me the most enjoyment out of every game. I'm on the last boss cell now, at times it is frustrating.

The new accessability/difficulty features just enable other people to have their share of fun too. I don't get why people cry about achievements - if they talk about the steam/gog things, people have been unlocking them in unintended ways for ages, and any personal goals are unaffected by this. The core game is still refined/geared toward the same audience, these updates are just a sort facelift.

I presume it is because people like to feel special and get personally offended when it's pointed out the benchmark they use for that belief isn't really well suited to that in the first place.

I might put this one on my wishlist. How are the regular difficulty levels compared to Hollow Knight (that is my only good point of comparison)? I really liked Hollow Knight, so something similar might be really fun.

I haven't played Hollow Knight yet. I'd say the first two boss cells are rather accessible (first one is easy, second one is modest challenge), then from 3 up it gets hard. I also think it also depends on your playstyle, which weapons you favour.

I can imagine if you have a wife or girlfriend:
-Was my cooking good?
-Not better than anything else I've eaten.

Or a child:
-Daddy I got an A+ in Math!!!
-So what?

That's not really applicable. It's more like saying the fact that high schoolers can get an A devalues getting an A in university, or being able to cook delicious meals at home takes away from the skills of a professional cook.

If you constantly say "This is the best!" to everyone, you're indirectly saying it's all the same, even without actually saying it.
So, if for instance your child doesn't feel that his achievements are anything special, why bother working hard if everybody is getting an A+ just for participating?

But there's nothing like that here. Besides, that mentality, despite being forced through media, will not get you too far into any serious field.

I just got this game the other day, I'm going to try playing it as originally intended but, think no wrong of having an easier option there.

my time is very limited these days and, I no longer have the time to become pro at every game I do choose to play so, I entirely support the option of making things a bit easier so that progress is otherwise possible. some people won't have the patience to git gud, these people play games to enjoy the experience and have fun4, not turn their nose up at others.

I've got some games on my shelf that have been played for less than one hour because the control scheme was ridiculous and "not fun". would this option change the fun level of those games? absolutely yes, I'd actually be playing them! that's a win for me and the developers.

to those that are expressing disdain for these options, please grow up a little. if getting all the achievements is so important, you can always create your own set of achievements and host them somewhere, wouldn't that make it even more exclusive? 😂

there's no need to dump on developers for making their market bigger!

Quoting: TermyOther people's "admiration" (read: bragging rights) should also not be you sole motivation to invest time into getting better. If achievements are the only thing that motivates you to dig into a difficult game, you really should work on your self-sufficiency.
Who are you to say what should or shouldn't motivate people?
Motivation is a very hard thing to come by, so honestly, any source of it is absolutely valid to me.

Quoting: TermyThere are people out there that just don't have the reaction time or motor skills to master such a gamne - and there is nothing they can do about it, no matter how hard they train.
That is quite simply not true.
Everyone (unless an actual disability prevents them*) is capable of learning any skill at least to a level of "competent". Obviously, people have varying amounts of talent, but talent never prevents you from improving yourself in a skill - it "only" makes the process longer or faster.

I can fully understand that someone doesn't want to invest the time necessary to "git gud" in a game. I'm the same way about fighting games ala Street Fighter, hence I stopped playing them.
But then I just play one of the thousands of other games more suitable to me - I don't go about demanding Street Fighter be changed to suit my own laziness. I absolutely despise that kind of handout mentality, as it breeds weak minds. Nor would I want to impact the club of people who like SF the way that it is.

* And even then there are people who overcome their disabilities, e.g. the guy who beat Elden Ring (and others) while being only able to move his head and mouth, using a "mouth controller".
The guy could have gone whining on social media like so many others. Instead he overcame. Truly inspiring!

Quoting: TermyWhy exclude those people just because you tend to take shortcuts, just because they exist?
This makes zero sense to me. Not sure I get what you are talking about here.

You sure are expending a bunch of energy complaining about something that has literally no effect on you whatsoever. The lapsed writer in me is jealous of your word count in this thread.

P.S., no one cares about your video game achievements except you. It isn't an exclusive club, it's a club of one that nobody else has any interest in joining.
