FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE has officially landed on Humble Store and Steam, and the good news is that it works on Linux plus it's Steam Deck Verified. Seems Valve were well aware to get it Deck Verified status right away, looks like we know why Proton 7.0-3 released recently then!
You know the Steam Deck is getting noticed, and clearly important to the gaming industry, when the Final Fantasy VII series Executive Produce at Square Enix mentions it directly in the 25th Anniversary Celebration video that you can see below. I think the importance of moments like that cannot be overstated. The Steam Deck mention is at about 3:40.

Since it's a big one, and one I was hoping to eventually play personally, I decided to dive in and take a quick look. Since it's Steam Deck Verified, every part of it should work well but that does depend on how thorough the verification system is, for such an expansive game.

The next game in the series, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, is confirmed for 2024 but will be exclusive to the PS5. Well, for now anyway, eventually it's likely to come to Steam just like other PlayStation games have been. Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion, a remake of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 for PSP, is also confirmed to be coming to Steam "this Winter".
Oh and if you missed it, we're even getting Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered on Steam in August. So hopefully Proton will be ready for that too.

Can someone explain the different FF7 Remake Versions? I didn't follow it closely and I think I read that there will be multiple parts.

My current setup can run this game at 1080p on high, but it makes my GPU sound like a jet engine. Guess I won't be playing this again until I get a new GPU; whenever that ends up being. I JUST bought this one back in December when I built my PC.

Had a similar issue with my Asus Phoenix GTX 1660 Super. Lots of games that I couldn't play at max settings because of the noise and heat (not because the gpu lacked performances). Since gpu prices were through the roof, I ended up buyind an IDCooiling Iceflow 240 VGA cooler:

Not on the cheap side, but it's doing a much better job than the stock cooler. It went down from 80-81deg with 100% fan speed (hairdryer sound) to 56-60deg with 60% fan which is much quieter than my case fans (CM SickleFlow 120). I can say with confidence that I have a silent build, now.
Prices are way down, today, so this solution might not be as attractive as it was, couple of months ago, but still an option if you plan on keeping your gpu for another build (I will probably put it in my son's computer, when I upgrade).

As I grew up on the Ultima series, and never really had a NES, I have not played any of the Final Fantasy games. Even during that era I had a Sega Master System, so Phantasy Star was what I played (though I never did finish it). Finally bought all the FF games the other day on Steam and the first one has been remade and looks like a SNES game, so I suppose I'll have to start with that one, right?

Also FFVII Rebirth will also be PS5-exclusive for at least a year, if not longer.

Ultima and FF are drastically different games. While the NES ports of Ultima 3 and 4 look very similar to the FF games, Ultima games are open-world CRPGs ported to a console while FF are largely railway JRPGs. Very very different gameplay in most cases even.

I’d start up a NES emulator and play the originals that way, IMO.

True and in the US Final Fantasy 4-6 used to be Final Fantasy 1-3, because the original Final Fantasy 1-3 was never released in the Americas. So it’s possible his Steam version is actually Final Fantasy 4, but I think that was corrected and the original Final Fantasy 1 got a crappy graphics update. The original experience (graphics and balancing) is perfect to me.

Yup, hence the reason I never got into them at all. Figured I may as well 'see what the fuss is about.' Though I'm not a huge fan of railway RPGs and have never really gotten into JRPGs specifically. Closest would be Phantasy Star. I do find it amusing that when Ultima IV was released for the SMS, it was (and is) the best looking version of it, and it very much followed the computer version. But Nintendo never wanted that, and so they all look / play similar to the JRPGs.

Final Fantasy 1 was released in the US as Final Fantasy 1.
They then skipped FF2 and FF3.
Final Fantasy 4 was then released as Final Fantasy 2 in the US.
FF5 was skipped
Final Fantasy 6 was then released as Final Fantasy 3 in the US.

FF 1 to 6 all got a Pixel Remaster and are all numbered correctly.
