Minecraft 1.19 - The Wild Update is out now. Not only that, all owners now get both Java & Bedrock together as they've been merged into a single purchase.

Not that it particularly matters to Linux players, since Microsoft / Mojang still have no plans to bring the Bedrock version to Linux but still good as a whole to see. They will remain as two separate editions but now you always get both.

Anyway, The Wild Update! It's here! Trailer below:

Some of what's new includes the Mangrove Swamp biome, Mangrove Trees, Mangrove Blocks, Mud and Mud Brick Blocks, Clay renewability, Frogs and Tadpoles, the Deep Dark biome, Ancient Cities, Darkness mob effect, Sculk, Sculk Veins, Sculk Shrieker, and Sculk Catalyst Blocks, Warden mob, Allay mob, Boat with Chest, new music, 3D Directional Audio simulation and much more has been added in.

There's plenty of tweaks to existing features too. See the full update notes for more.

It does matter for me. I had the bedrock edition only because java was way more expensive but now I can play minecraft on linux.

Well then, can't argue with that side of the fence :)

My concern is that they are planning on discontinuing Java edition and then saying "well, the majority of Java players are on Windows, so they can just play Bedrock!"

Currently, Java supports Windows 7 and later, while Bedrock supports Windows 10 and later. I worry that, when it comes time to drop Windows 7 and 8, Microsoft will think there is no longer a reason to maintain two separate codebases.

I should note that this concern isn't because of Microsoft's conflict of interest in (not) supporting Linux. None of the big game studios, not even Valve or Paradox, are willing to bring full-sized games to Linux unless they can use most of the same code for Windows. Every proprietary game on Linux would lose support if the developer no longer wanted to support the Windows version.

Last time I checked buying BE on one platform didn't give it to you on any other platform. Has that changed? Does buying Minecraft on desktop now give you Bedrock on Android, or vice versa?

No it hasn't but there is a catch with the bundle. If you previously own MC Java you get MC for Windows (aka. Bedrock) for FREE and vica versa. What I had was not Android MC, I had MC for Windows because the price of that was %80 percent lower than MC Java. Also it is not possible to play MC for Win on Linux so I couldn't play MC on Linux.
Until now.

They can't. Most players will prefer Java over Bedrock because Java supports mods but Bedrock doesn't. Millions of people (no exaggeration) would go nuts if they did that.

I work in IT and attended a Microsoft event where they were giving steep discounts for a lot of software and I picked up Minecraft for $3USD (a good deal for sure)...then I realized it was the Windows Store version. I've launched it once back when I was occasionally dual-booting and that was it.

Now if only the Windows Store purchase included the Java version

Ah, I am an idiot. I thought Bedrock and Win Store versions were different.

Ah, okay, that makes more sense.

Bedrock has mods; whether it 'supports' is a different thing.

Uh, it does. That's what the article said.

Windows Store purchase == Bedrock edition.

When you fire up Minecraft Java, it asks you to login via Microsoft. It's done that for the last couple major versions. They deprecated and migrated the old Mojang accounts around that same time.

I'm the 1% who liked Bedrock more - it has the old combat and runs better. Hope to some day get it on Linux too!

I'd like to see bedrock on Linux too. Yes I know java is better but I've played bedrock with my 2 children for a number of years (me on Windows before I ditched it for Linux and them on android).

I know there's ways of setting up servers to allow java and bedrock to connect together but just for once I'd enjoy a simpler way to get it done. I'm due to get my deck next month so I'll probably give the geyser server method a try then.

Seems so odd that MS will put Minecraft Dungeons on steam but not the main game itself.
