The upcoming System Shock from Nightdive Studios is still coming, and a brand new trailer was recently shown off during the PC Gaming Show 2022. We don't know when it will release though.

Originally released in 1994, this remake was crowdfunded on Kickstarter and it hasn't been without trouble with development at one point being paused but it seems they're close to the finishing line now. Linux support for it was a stretch-goal at $1.1 million USD that was hit, so hopefully they will come through with a good version of it.

QuoteLo lo lo look at you, hacker. a pathetic creature of meat and bone, panting and sweating as you run through my corridors. How can you challenge a perfect, immortal machine?
God I want this game. The original, and Deus Ex six (!) years later, sandwiching Half Life - these games defined my love for PC gaming, committed me to it completely. Sure, Doom and Quake helped, but these three were actual stories where you were the star. They were phenomenal.

Despite myself, I have such high hopes, based on that trailer. My fingers are very much crossed.

System Shock 2 shouldn't not be forgotten as it was bit more accessible version of the original, but wasn't simplified too much. Deus Ex though quite soon took immersive sims to whole another level.

Luckily it wasn't last of its kind, but there's not too many immersive sims out there.

Can you recommend some other games that are similar?

I haven't played all of these, but as far as I know, they should be fine examples of the genre: Both Ultima Underworlds, Bioshock series, Dishonored series, Prey (the Arkane game, not the earlier one), Deus Ex series and Thief series.

There's even more, but the list was getting quite long already. From the Linux native side, only Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Bioshock Infinite are native. Rest should work with Proton as there's nothing very recent in the list.

I tried playing System Shock, but it's too archaic for me (and before anyone calls me a "zoomer", I'm 32). If they keep SHODAN's voice and remain true to the original, the remake (if it's ever finished) might be what I need.

They also started collecting the backerkit fee. Of course my card info was already a few years obsolete...

Looks promising. I'm a backer so I'm looking forward to the release.

Quoting: TimeFreezeI'll be surprised if the promised Linux version will actually happen.

Night Dive are usually good at releasing Linux versions. But I guess we'll see.

System Shock 2 was a little less claustrophobic which probably helped it being more playable for many people. It felt less like traditional Descent like games.

You were 4 when the original came out, "Get off my lawn!" 😜 J/k.

It does stand on the other side of the line where the traditional WASD with mouse look took over. It has the older interface (like Daggerfall) that can be really hard to use, especially if you are more used to fast paced FPS.

It also had that "old school" difficultly BS:

Spoiler, click me
like to beat the game you have to go back through the entire station to get 1 digit of the self destruct code from every level, wtf?

Or

Spoiler, click me
Diego ambushing you by the exec elevator

And some truly good old school difficulty, like the wiring schematic mini game, and a few of the traps.

I didn't back it, but if the reviews are good, I'll buy it.
