Pokete is a game we introduced you too recently that's inspired by Pokémon but you play it in a terminal. A new release is out bringing some nice advancements.

A big one for version 0.8.0 is the addition of audio and it's suitably retro and fits right in with the theme too. Really helps bring the game to life just that little bit more. Easy to run too, with an AppImage included with the release that you can just drop into a terminal and get going.

Here's the highlights from the release:

  • Added audio
  • Removed pynput as a dependency on windows
  • A lot of spelling and grammar fixes
  • Fixed Poketes not beeing freeable
  • Added some game ballancing
  • Trainers can now obtain more than one Pokete
  • Made run away random
  • Added remappable controls
  • Save location is now based on XDG dirs, no intervention needed
  • Added quick attacks using yzcv so the attackamenu can be skipped

You can grab it free from GitHub.

Terminal based games are something special. Has anyone played Bandit? It's a "wargame" - you learn about the command line in order to play, it's quite incredible. I think some of you might quite enjoy it.

Here're the instructions for "Level 0"

Bandit Level 0

Level Goal

The goal of this level is for you to log into the game using SSH. The host to which
you need to connect is bandit.labs.overthewire.org, on port 2220. The username is
bandit0 and the password is bandit0. Once logged in, go to the Level 1 page to find
out how to beat Level 1.

Commands you may need to solve this level
ssh

This is pretty cute! I heard about it a few days ago, but with this reminder, I might check it out.

no shade, game looks amazing, and i love terminal games.
but my favorite part of this post is the changelog stating that they've fixed various spelling and grammar errors, and then the whole changelog being full of spelling and grammar errors.

This game is quite fun! I hope more people can contribute so we can eventually get dozens of hours of story and gameplay.
