Tesla and Steam? It's coming and it sounds like it's progressing nicely with a demo to come soon to show it off.

Something that has been in the works for a while, and we already know their entertainment software uses Linux so it will use the Linux version of Steam. This will also include the Proton compatibility tool for running Windows games as well to enable plenty more gaming in your fancy Tesla.

We actually saw hints of this back in 2021, as Tesla were advertising for "Linux Game Development at Tesla" position which you can see via the Wayback Machine. This involved working with "Linux, Mesa, Vulkan, OpenGL, Proton/Lutris, Wine, etc." so it was pretty clear where they were going with it. Add to that Elon Musk said on Twitter in early 2022 that "We’re working through the general case of making Steam games work on a Tesla vs specific titles. Former is obviously where we should be long-term.".

Just recently on July 16, 2022 again on Twitter, Musk said: "We’re making progress with Steam integration. Demo probably next month.".

I can see it now.. when someone says: You should get out more!

"I'm going out!"

5 minutes down the road, pulls over and continues their game on their Tesla Deck!

With all these companies investing in Proton we'll probably see the time when Microsoft adds a new feature to DX and at the same time adds it to Proton.

Now all we need is autonomous driving that doesn't get you killed! :D

Now if the steering wheel can be used as a controller when stopped, that would make for a neat car sim rig. Just pair it with a VR headset for extra immersion :)

As much I'd love the idea of playing Max Payne, Lumines, or Half-Life 2 on Steam in a car, or opening RetroArch and emulating Tetris Plus or Spyro the Dragon, I do consider being able to play games in a car a very good idea. That only works if someone (or something) else is driving the car.

Well, it would be funnier if microsoft would have to port back fixes from Proton because otherwise the games/software won't run on ms-windows

So, I buy this car for me put steam on. I'm home playing a steam game. My spouse then takes my car to do an errand, it turns on, logs into my steam account ( kicking me at home off). So now I'm trying to call my spouse while they are running errands to go back to the car and close steam?

I can kinda see the criticisms that these innovations are all thought up of people that don't have to think about family life.

Microsoft has been trying very hard lately to prevent machines from installing Linux natively via hidden bios options that most normies would have no clue about or even risk touching no matter how much they wish to try or move to Linux.

So any movement towards supporting more Linux and Proton stuff will be overall good in the long run for Linux as a echo-system; regardless of how much the extreme/hardcore workstation productivity users protest! (you know the ones that believe Linux is only for them and translation layers are the devil! Native or go home, we will bomb your house... those people...)

I thought Steam actually had some kind of family account thing.
