The Humble Deck Builder Bundle is live, here's what works on Linux & Steam Deck

I'm going back-and-forth on whether to buy this. FYI, Gwent is free, what the bundle includes is some kind of starter pack. Also, Gwent DOES NOT work on Steam Deck (at least using Heroic). No idea if it would work on regular Linux.

Gwent requires some fiddling (Like a Windows UA string for playgwent.com) but it galaxy seems to install it fine afterward. I had to install gwent, then redeem the ultimate starter key on Gog though, to avoid a warning about not owning it.

The black screen on launch for folks on lutris doesn't affect me for some reason. (I'm using Wine-GE though, therein might be the difference.)

Really stoked to try One Step from Eden, as the GBA Battle Network games were some of my favorites back in middle/high school. (Particularly BN4: Red Sun/Blue Moon.)

Magic the Gathering 100% ruined all deck building games for me. Then again, I am still waiting for the INWO one to release...

CCGs and deckbuilding are very different things though - a "deckbuilding game" is a game where adding and removing cards to your deck is part of the game, not just a game where you build a deck out of your collection and then play with it.

It comes from boardgames like Dominion, but on videogames roguelite deckbuilders became a kind of new genre after Slay the Spire. Deckbuilders usually have you go through your deck several times, don't have a minimum deck size (in fact, removing cards to make the deck more consistent is a big part), and you are usually given a pick between limited options rather than "your entire collection" - and those often cost an in-game resource, as opposed to having a "meta-game" (it's as if you bought cards with mana instead of money, because it happens in-game...).

Not that this bundle seems to care, as neither Gwent or Cultist Simulator quite fit (for different reasons). But when people mention "deckbuilder", don't expect anything at all like MtG.

Was I the only one who misread "Deck Builder Bundle" as a bundle that one can build for the Steam Deck, as opposed to a bundle relating to the deck-builder genre?

Nope i misread it as well...... I have zero interest in the Steam Deck but that misread made peaked my interest enough to click on the story to find out more..... was disappointed to say the least.....

Gwent is also available on Steam and you connect to the game with your GOG account, so you should get content redeemed there with the Steam version. The key in the bundle is not for the game itself (it's a f2p) but for a starter pack that gives you resources in the game. You might have to install the game on GOG first to redeem that pack as mentioned above, though.

It works very well using Proton (or Wine if you prefer to launch the GOG version) apart from two tweaks needed:
- when you're new to the game, it displays a video that uses the Windows Media framework (or whatever it's called) that may need Proton GE to display −not sure it's still the case; after you've started playing and finished the tutorial, the video is never shown again and regular Proton works;
- since an update to the game a few weeks ago, it doesn't launch directly with Proton because of a missing mfc140u.dll DLL that you'll have to find and put manually in the prefix; not sure it applies to the GOG version too, I haven't played it in a while and that issue is pretty recent.

I always check out Steam Deck stories since Deck compatibility generally means good things if you're using contemporaneous portable hardware with similar resolution and such (GPD Win Max 2021 running Xubuntu in my case), but this one didn't turn out to be for me, either. Still love these reports with all of the ProtonDB and Steam Deck Verified info, though - they're super-handy!

Heroic is missing a replacement for the GoG Background Service.
There is preliminary work at https://github.com/imLinguin/comet but it does not allow for much more than starting Gwent if you check the todo list :)
