Love your superhero stuff? Keep an eye on Capes, an upcoming turn-based strategy RPG full of people with superpowers. It's being developed by Spitfire Interactive, who have risen from the ashes of Defiant Development who created the Hand of Fate series.

Capes is set in a world where the villains won, brutally. Two decades later, a new generation of heroes are rising up and that's where you come in. You and your little band of heroes will be going out in tactical turn-base battles rescuing people, and it all seems a little XCOM or perhaps even like the upcoming Marvel's Midnight Suns.

"Combine superpowers to create iconic strategies worthy of their own comic book panel, like slinging a spiky-crystal-covered powerhouse head-first into a villain’s chest. Character diversity is at the forefront of Capes throughout its modern take on classic comic tropes. Not just in powers, but in the heroes themselves to showcase a variety of ethnicities, genders, hopes, and dreams. The future is in the hands of the nascent youth as they work together to fight against the overwhelming odds of the generation before them."

I think Cheeseness mentioned on Discord that he's had some (small) contribution to this one too. I'm looking forward to checking it out.

That's basically the plot of XCOM 2, with superheroes. Which is not a bad thing, XCOM 2 is pretty high up there in my list of most-played games.

Wait, in XCOM 2 the aliens already won before the beginning? I feel like I was playing a different game.

Yep! I've been doing contract work on this one. Very happy to be supporting Defiant alumni.

My reading of New New XCOM was that it reframed New XCOM as all entirely being a simulation run on you by Advent at the facility you're rescued from in the tutorial mission (with the implication being that that information was what they used to defeat humanity and take over earth).

We are talking about the same game, right? In XCOM 2 you start out as a tiny resistance force of rag-tag soldiers fighting from an underdog position needing to rely on stealth and ambushes, in a world that's been conquered and occupied by aliens for decades (long enough to reshape some cities into gleaming futuristic Utopian visions and let others crumble into zombie Lost-filled ruins) trying to reconnect with other resistance forces around the world to ultimately forge a strong enough resistance force to drive off the aliens* and retake Earth.

**Well, the Elders/Ethereals mainly – XCOM: Chimera Squad reveals a whole lot of the various aliens ended up settling down on Earth and integrating.

I . . . guess not.

Oh, OK!

To get somewhat back on topic, given how much I've enjoyed XCOM 1/2/CS, I'll have to keep an eye on Capes.

I think I love turn-based tactics games, but they don't "stick." I don't open them up much. I have played quite a few different series. I don't know. I really want people interaction (co-op) in my games more than ever. Games that meet both (Divinity: Original Sin 1+2), get many hours of use.
