Recently, there were was an upgrade to the Battle.net client that caused it to break on Linux desktop / Steam Deck but it seems the issue is thankfully solved now.

The thing is, Blizzard don't support Linux as a platform at all for the client or their games. However, they do have a bit of history of now and then fixing up major issues preventing people playing with the Wine compatibility layer. Seems that level of support is still ongoing after the latest incident.

Around 9 days ago, it seems an update just broke it entirely and the app wouldn't install and update properly resulting in some sort of loop. While it's a shame no testing is done for Linux and Steam Deck before updates are rolled out, at least we're not stuck forever as they've now solved it:

Howdy Everyone!

I do apologies we didn’t post here sooner but the development teams was aware that a recent change did cause havoc with Wine and the software used for Steam Deck. This wasn’t intended.

A fix was deployed and it appears it’s working. If you are still having issues please try a reinstall of the app so it fully updates to the 8020 build.

Check on it today and it seems all good on my end now too.

Good news, since Overwatch 2 releases next month and I'm sure plenty will want to play it.

Quoting: GuestObligatory stop promoting Blizzard comment. [...] Blizzard, EA and Ubi can all go die in a fire.
I get the sentiment, but to succeed as a platform, we need support from these companies. Otherwise Linux will always be a niche market.

I wish I could say I agree, I mean I understand, but they are so anti-consumer no one on any platform should support them. My roommate was one of the ones caught in Ubi's little account purge scam now they want all sorts of legal BS to prove she's the owner of her account and she can't play the games she paid for.

I don't know how many times I've been screwed by Blizzard "freezing" my account due to suspicious activity. Suspicious login from the same IP that has always been logged in from...RIGHT...

This stuff transcends the platform you're on but it's accepted because everything is rented/leased and loaned -paid for or not these days. Sadly most the time when talking about this stuff you just get trolled by young kids who have no experience or clue they could OWN something without accounts or 3rd party reliance and still play it 20+ years later.

It's weird, right? Like you used to be able to buy stuff and think 'hey, I can keep this for 20 years and then play it whenever I want.' Now I've seen articles stating that a vast majority of young people don't even think they'll ever own a house. I bet if Disney could buy up large amounts of homes and create a Disney City, and just lease it out to people, they would.
This is one of the reasons why I randomly go back to playing older games on the non-connected consoles. Look at how many games on the PS2 can either no longer be played, or have lost multiplayer functionality because the services have gone down. That was one of the early consoles to allow network play.

How many games are now unusable on Windows 10+ because they dropped support for safedisc and securom? Unless of course you pirate, or are lucky enough to want a game already packaged up on GOG.

And the accounts... seriously hate it. I was commenting the other day about going to a physical store and then being asked for your email address. Like.. why? So I can get all the latest news from a store I visit once in a blue moon? No thanks, I'll pass...

Dunno about Europe, but in the US and Canada the years since the 2008+ financial crisis have seen the rise of big corporate rental portfolios, with companies owning scads of homes and busily jacking the rent--sometimes with one or a few major players controlling most of the rentals in an area. It started after the banks foreclosed on everybody--deep pockets started buying up all the properties for cheap. I suppose there's nothing to stop Disney from getting involved in the racket.

You can add the launcher to steam and play it using Proton, works great for heroes of the storm, I didn't try WoW

Lutris Overwatch script (fresh install) still doesn't work for me.

Bottles does work but performance is worse with Bottles.
