Valve has announced some changes to their major seasonal sales, along with the Lunar New Year Sale being dropped.

In their announcement to developers, they noted that they will now be doing a major Spring Sale instead as part of their four major season sales. Valve said that this was a popular request from developers and publishers, and it allows them to space them out a little more enabling developers to "expand and execute their discounting calendar".

Here's the main upcoming events:

  • Autumn Sale: Nov 22nd to Nov 29th
  • Winter Sale: Dec 22nd to Jan 5th
  • Spring Sale: March 16th to 23rd

Explaining a little more on why the Lunar sale is being dropped, Valve mentioned that it originally began in 2016 "to celebrate the influx of game developers and customers from territories like Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, and South Korea". Over the years though, more developers seem to have been complaining to Valve that it's too close to their December holiday sale period and so they expect "customers will be better served by a little bit more time between the big Steam-wide seasonal sales".

It does make plenty of sense when you think about it. Too many big sales like it was a bit overloading.

One sale event less is better for consumers? Since when? Do you like paying more for games?

As someone who only buys games during sales.......... Just means one less sale to spend money on...... So more money will stay in my wallet...... That is good for me......

Controversial decision

It is not less events, it is more evenly spaced out events. Instead of having the big sales on November, December and early February, it is now November, December and late March.

I expect there will still be a minor sale in the same date, just as often there was some sort of spring sale but it was not as "good" as the big seasonal ones. But they flipped which is the bigger sale.

I'd say one big sale every four months would make even more sense.

I hope they still release some lunar new year items and some smaller sales perhaps.
Be a real shame not to have the animal in a blanket stickers every year.

I always hoped that the Winter & Summer sales would be the BIGGEST of the year.

I'd say the publishers/devs make the sales. Valve sets the dates, yet to me it's the number of reduced titles on my wishlist, the amount of new recommendations in Liams posts and the actual % that make a sale big... And as far as I know that's not directly up to Valve, is it? :D
Anyhow, there's only one kind of deal that I only ever saw on the big sales: Rocksmith DLC. And with the new Rocksmith upon us, I fear those times are over.

All I can see is another missed opportunity for more inclusive terminology.

Steam sales are meh now they don't do the crazy 90 percent off flash sales. Of the games people actually want I remember getting dishonoured for 99 pence in steam flash sale. But then the game pubs complained now we get 25 percent off ancient titles very rare you get good deals now. But honestly I have 500 games I have played them all not to completion obviously but tried them all the ones I haven't like I just made a never touch folder and they all sit in there. Wish I could gift them out to people that would be a nice feature

Actually I try to always pay full price for native Linux games, yes.

Already mentioned this on other occasions, but I do spend less money outside of sales. I also end up playing those games I paid full price for more too.

"Spring" seems fairly inclusive to me.

But how will I know when it's a new year without Steam to tell me‽
