The Kubuntu Focus team recently announced the Kubuntu Focus NX, a small but surprisingly mighty little Linux desktop. Nice to see more vendors continue to push out new Linux products, although Kubuntu Focus still only ships to US + Canada.

It can be configured with either an 11th Generation Intel Core i7-1165G7 or a Intel Core i5-1135G7, with Iris Xe Graphics, 8GB RAM configurable to 64GB, 250GB Samsung NVMe configurable up to 2TB with space for a second SATA SSD drive wrapped up in a Intel NUC Panther Canyon chassis.

Ports Available:

  • 2 x Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C with DisplayPort 1.4
  • 1 x HDMI 2.0b
  • 1 x Mini DisplayPort 1.4
  • 3 x USB-A 3.2 Gen2
  • 1 x RJ-45 Intel i225-V 2.5 GbE LAN (10/100/1000/2500 Mbit/s)
  • 1 x 2-in-1 Audio Jack with Headphone and Microphone
  • 1 x Far-Field Quad-Array Microphones
  • 1 SDXC Memory Card Reader
  • 1 x Kensington Lock Mount
  • 1 x VESA Monitor-Mount Bracket
  • 1 x DC-IN Power Connection

Pricing starts at $695.

"The NX is perfect for developers, creators, and engineers that want or need compatibility with the OS that powers the internet and billions of other devices. We feel its tiny footprint, high performance, and the Kubuntu 22.04 LTS OS makes it a great choice for development workstations, office servers, and media centers. Thanks to the great port selection, one can easily add an eGPU to run large ML pipelines or turbo-charge rendering performance when needed." — Michael Mikowski, General Manager, The Kubuntu Focus Project

I've always loved the NUC computers, now with Thunderbolt 3 I think it's finally viable for gaming. Hopefully by the time I'm ready to get one we have AMD Thunderbolt...

It slightly annoys me that computer companies OR AMD is not better at making sure AMD APUs end up in computers like this.
Where I work we have our own built AMD embedded APUs on a inhouse designed motherboard, for other purposes, but they work really well for desktop use as well. And at even smaller footprint than this.
If only AMD solutions would show up more often...
