The Wandering Village, the new city-builder from Stray Fawn Studio has clearly become something of a hit and for good reason. Announced in a Steam post, the developer mentioned how "The Wandering Village has sold 50’000 copies in the first two days" and it also has a Very Positive user rating now too.

It has already become one of my absolute favourites of 2022. There's so much to love about it even in this early stage from the unique setting to just watching your people run around doing errands, it looks wonderful in motion. Dealing with poison has been interesting, since it's also a bit of a survival game. Sometimes you go through areas of the world that are poisoned causing your plants and trees to get infected, and it can spread pretty quickly.

Here's what they mentioned from their roadmap to expect in future updates:

Confirmed features:
  • New biome - Water
  • New biome - Ruins
  • New locations and events
  • New buildings
  • Tameable birds
  • Flying merchants to trade with
  • An additional Onbu skin
  • Controller support
  • Steam Deck support
  • Xbox version
Things we want to improve:
  • More story content
  • New and improved Onbu interactions
  • More city building mechanics
  • Better villager AI
  • Better balancing of the difficulty
  • UI interactions/understandability

My Onbu took a break in a rather nice looking spot:

I also love that this zoom-out mode still shows your villagers running around doing stuff.

Very keen to see how they keep expanding this one, going to be playing a lot of it.

You can buy it on Steam.

I've only played the demo thus far, but this is one that absolutely deserves it's success. I fully intend to be adding it to my collection at some point in the near(ish) future.

Xbox version
Interesting that this is their first port of call when PlayStation and Switch are both bigger markets. Maybe they just have an Xbox themselves.

Oh, wow, I never realized there was a button to hide the UI! That's great for screenshots.

I saw that announcement, and it's great to see that it's been so popular. Hopefully that means they'll have plenty of time and support to work on the things in the roadmap and add new features. I wouldn't mind a little more crop variety, right it's pretty much "beets in mountains" → "corn and cactus in deserts" → "corn (and tomatoes? I haven't unlocked them yet) in jungle", plus wheat on the side. The way plants grow differently (or die) at different temperatures would pretty easily allow a few more crops in there that could still be functionally distinct from each other.

Is it an easier port?

Does it not cost devs to be on the switch/playstation platform ?

Dunno. It's Unity, I think.

No more than Xbox, AFAIK.

No clue as to how much it is, maybe they only had enough funding to do one at the start .

Very happy to see this as Stray Fawn were some of the first Swiss game developers to take seriously, they did a lot of pioneering to make game dev in this country competitive. Tiny studio as well.

Wishlisted for sure.

According to a post on Steam they've hit a hundred thousand copies sold now.
