GE-Proton (also known as Proton GE) as a community-built version of the Proton compatibility layer to run Windows games, with a new release out now and FSR is back.

Versions 7-37 and 7-36 were released, initially removing AMD FSR being in it directly, but thankfully another community hacker sorted out the patches needed for it so it made a return.

Here's what's included:

  • Import nvapi enablement list from proton upstream (ValveSoftware@9a708e0)
  • Import media-converter changes from proton upstream (ValveSoftware@5339633)
  • Update dxvk
  • Update vkd3d-proton
  • Update wine-bleeding edge
  • Add protonfix for Shatterline (thanks orowith2os)
  • Add protonfix for Halo Reach mod tools (thanks orowith2os)
  • Add protonfix for Ougon Musoukyoku (thanks namaenonaimumei)

This version is not included in Steam or Steam Deck, with you needing to add it yourself. It often includes fixes Valve hasn't yet done officially, and some things they can't (legally) do for videos. It does come with less quality assurance and testing though, so your mileage may vary.

How to use it? You can simply use the ProtonUp-Qt tool that we've covered here numerous times now. See the previous GOL Guide on GE-Proton with ProtonUp

I think the renaming from Proton-GE to GE-Proton happened with rebasing it from Proton instead of Wine. So the last Proton-GE version was Proton-7.3-GE-1 and GE-Proton's first version was GE-Proton7-1.

Great work from all contributors! From Valve for continuously improving Proton, From Codeweavers updating Wine, from doitjusin and joshua-ashton for DXVK, from HansKristian for vkd3d, of course from Glorious Eggroll for pulling in all the latest patches from various sources and bundling it into an easy to use bleeding edge Proton version and so many more.

And here are we... enjoying so many games that "just work" now on Linux, though they have initially not been meant to run on other platforms. Just incredible.

It's amazing how steam deck is pushing gaming on linux further than it ever has. Can't wait to see a few years down the line how support for Linux will change and Valves next Steam Deck iteration

Shatterline doesn't need the protonfix since the R66 game update. Devs fixed the issues on their side with it.
The only remaining issue is that the steam overlay doesnt work with the game (Unless you use gamescope) which makes it impossible to buy ingame items with real money.

• Technical tweaks for Steam Deck support.


First fix was the d3dcompiler_47 issue with EAC kick. They included the dll with the game.
Second fix was the win10 using RIO sockets that are not supported by wine.

Hi All, today we updated the game with a version without RIO sockets, it works well now on Steam Deck and I hope it will work without setting win7 now on Linux as well

If I installed Proton GE previously do I need to do anything explicitly or will it update itself?

Also, what version of Proton should I be using with RDR2? When Valve put out their recent Steam OS update with the RDR2 fix, I initially ran it with compatibility settings not specifying any particular proton version and it ran great for over an hour.

When I tried to run RDR2 a second time (since Valve's Steam OS fix) last night it wouldn't launch. I set it to Proton Experimental and it seems to have worked. I'm just curious if there is a different version that is preferred?

GE-Proton won't update itself if you've installed it through ProtonUp-Qt or some other non-package-manager method (which is the case in 99% of use cases, especially on the Steam Deck) so you'll need to do it manually.

As for RDR2, I can't answer you definitively, but in general I think using the latest version of GE-Proton is beneficial for pretty much everybody and everything, unless some game is explicitly mentioned as being broken (or specifically NOT broken) with X or Y version.

Cool, thank you! I will install the new version of GE when my Steam Deck Docking Station arrives tomorrow. I remember it being pretty clumsy installing it originally with the built in controls which was the only time I've used desktop mode so far.

So, should I uninstall the old version of GE or will the new version take care of that? Or do I want to keep multiple versions of GE like mainline Proton has lots of versions?

ProtonUP-QT (available on the Discover store on the Steam Deck) can update GE-Proton for you

The default version of Proton used by Steam is the newest normal release installed... but the fixes Valve announces as freshly released are usually available only on Proton Experimental for a while before hitting a normal version
