Two bits of big NVIDIA news for you today one confirmed and one not so confirmed, which concerns a double-cancellation with the RTX 4080 12GB and a 4090 Ti / Titan.

Firstly, the RTX 4080 12GB is confirmed to be cancelled by NVIDIA directly. There was a lot of backlash on this due to both the naming of it and the price considering there is also the RTX 4080 16GB which is still a thing. Part of the issue was that while they shared the model number, they were clearly vastly different cards in actual spec no doubt what should have been a 4070 but NVIDIA wanted to price it higher.

In a very short statement they simply said this:

The RTX 4080 12GB is a fantastic graphics card, but it’s not named right. Having two GPUs with the 4080 designation is confusing.

So, we’re pressing the “unlaunch” button on the 4080 12GB. The RTX 4080 16GB is amazing and on track to delight gamers everywhere on November 16th.

If the lines around the block and enthusiasm for the 4090 is any indication, the reception for the 4080 will be awesome.

As for a potential 4090 Ti / Titan, according to sources familiar with YouTuber Moore's Law Is Dead (video) who claims they are a legitimate source based on all the information they've been given, this has also been cancelled as it was "tripping breakers, melting power supplies, and sometimes melting itself".

Seems like NVIDIA aren't having a good time lately. Especially after EVGA pulled out of doing any future NVIDIA cards too.

If they are pushing the silicon so hard that the cards start melting, maybe they are due for a big rethink. The 4080 already has a stock TDP of 320 W (and we know the card vendors will try to push it if they can) and that would never fly for me, too hot, too costly, too loud.

Looks like Nvidia has hit the "thermal transfer" VS the "need for speed" issue just as the EV has. The answer is easy, Silicon Carbide. I hope they realize this and are working to transition to SiC for all their future needs.

Yeah, we are at the point where it would be better to have cooler and smaller stuff, yet as nanometers go smaller, the gaming systems slowly turn into watercooled mainframes that eat as much electricity as small villages

Hey, comeon now. There's no reason to over-exaggerate here. It doesn't require as much electricity as a small village. It uses, maybe, enough energy to power 4 washer/dryer combos, max.

That's barely even half of a small village.

Depends on the village. Some villages wish they had 4 washer/drier combos worth of electronics.

For the sake of conversation, we'll assume we're all talking about those well to do, up on the latest trends villages here. One of those places where everyone has a satellite dish up on their roof.

I am starting to understand EVGA for saying bye bye, here you are with a few containers full of 4080 12gb which you can now repack, new bios and sell as a 4070 something..... if your lucky

Dunno why they're backtracking so heavily here. They could've made a helluva marketing campaign over this little issue.

After FreeBSD on toasters, here is gaming on heaters. Mankind's next step: phoning with your hair dryer.

Well its cool that they actually listened for once, trying to trick customers like this would have been a really shitty move. Now if they can also fix some bugs in their drivers so I can actually get 120hz instead of 60hz would be nice, I am currently trying to get a hold of an AMD card since I got tired of Nvidias slowness when it comes to fixing bugs.
