A much loved action-horror classic Silent Hill 2 is getting a modern remake and the good news is that it's coming to Steam. So it will most likely run in some form on Steam Deck and Linux desktop.

There's no release date yet and it's likely a good while off, so it gives Valve (and their partner CodeWeavers) plenty of time to keep on improving the Proton compatibility layer to ensure it's ready for more big hits like this. The Silent Hill 2 remake is being developed by Bloober Team SA, who are known for Layers of Fear, Blair Witch and The Medium.

I remember trying to play the original and "noping" out of it pretty quickly. Scary stuff back then.

What? Just this year I bought an RX 6600XT. This is madness!
Hope they can optimize more the game. Also my ryzen 1600 could have problems.

Awesome! The best Silent Hill gets a remake (that we all hope they don't screw up) and it's coming to Steam (and hopefully will run on Linux via Proton)…!

Not sure why, but for me Silent Hill was spooky, but not 'run away and flee' scary. I have come to this conclusion on what actually frightens me in a game. It's when you're mostly helpless. So in Silent Hill you can get a gun and fend off the mutant creatures. But a game like Penumbra... you have a crowbar. I got as far as a room where you have to sneak past the zombie dogs and if one of them see you, unless you can manage to clobber it over the head enough to take it out fast enough, it'll howl and attract more. That literally has given me more anxiety than any other game I've ever played. This is even compared to Skyrim VR with mods that made the dungeons pitch black...

That would be Silent Hlll f, taking place in 1960's Japan, somehow. There's also Silent Hill: Townfall by the makers of Stories Untold (which I quite liked but has issues on Proton) and Observation (which should run well these days).

Oh, and there's a twitch-stream focused choose-your-own-adventure-somehow-as-a-massive-group thing being developed by Genvid, Bad Robot Games, DJ2 Entertainment (film adaptations of games, mostly known for Sonic), and Behavior Interactive (Dead by Daylight), called Silent Hill: Ascension - that one I don't get the point of.

Do you know how to use Umineko Project port of the game? Their site is pretty confusing.

i have no idea what it is, i havent played the games yet but watched the animes and they are quite good.
i mean... with a few asterisks.

i recomend watching higurashi first, the first 2 seasons relased are classics the thirdy is still very good but not part of the main arc, the forth, well, its pure "fanservice" so be warned.
recently they relased a few more higurashi animes but i havent watched and my friend who did got disapointed.
as for umineko, i liked the anime despite a few issues, like obviously skiping/rushing content from the game, a lot of nonsense happening, not finishing the story and others... but i highly recomend to watch the first seasons of higurashi before watching umineko (actually the first 2 or 3) it make even less sense otherwise.
or play the game first...

anyway, its a great piece of art, if the game is as good as the anime, then its incredible.

I've heard the anime spoils the story and it's better to play the games first. But that can be subjective.

For those who never played the original: it's arguably the best horror game ever made, and one of the best of any genre.

It's absolutely drenched in atmosphere and has an exceptional story, with some of the most haunting imagery, sound, and characters ever produced. Some of the designers have since admitted almost they regretted making it because it was by far their best known work and they never managed to produce anything that matched it.

If Bloober team pull this off, and it actually works on Linux (they have a terrible track record in that department), this could be way up there with the Resi 2 remake as a must-buy release.

Do yourself the favour of going in blind, if you still can.

yeah, don't

This is a game that you need to experience unspoiled (in as much as that's now possible). There are critical - and very subtle - points that lose a lot of their impact if you know the story already

Right, that's what I've heard too. I've just set up the Umineko Project port - it's pretty good.
