Well this is perhaps exciting, seems Valve are cooking up something new with a trademark application for NEON PRIME. The application notes it's for "categories of computer game software, electronic game software, video game software, computer game programs downloadable via the internet" and so quite likely some new game is on the way.

It could be a game but then again it could be anything and it doesn't mean something will be released, as we've seen in the past Valve (like a lot of developers / publishers) prototypes a lot and cancels plenty before they ever see the light of day.

NEON PRIME was sent in as a trademark application on October 10th, so by doing so it's become public and anyone can go in and see. It doesn't give us a lot to go on though mind you but sure would be exciting for a new Valve game (or series?).

Valve are certainly on a roll lately with Half-Life: Alyx, Steam Deck and Aperture Desk Job. They've said before that multiple games are in development, so perhaps we're finally getting closer to seeing one of them?

Then again, it could also be multiple years away and could even be a new VR game for their long-rumoured upcoming VR headset codenamed Deckard. Of which, we know that they're still working towards that too, thanks to a new job listing that clearly mentions the developer will be responsible for "prototype, ship, and support consumer gaming products leveraging visual-inertial tracking (HMD and controllers), camera passthrough, environment understanding, eye tracking, and hand tracking".

What do you think NEON PRIME from Valve could be?

Update 15/10/22: as pointed out in a comment (thanks) there's another trademark application for NEON PRIME that gives us a different idea of what it could be as it's "intended to cover the categories of entertainment services, namely, providing online video games; provision of on-line entertainment, namely, on-line computer games; providing on-line computer games and on-line video games; electronic games services provided by means of the Internet; providing information in the fields of computer games and entertainment via the Internet; organization of competitions relating to video games, video game education, and video game entertainment; providing information in the field of on-line computer games and on-line video games and computer games".

Certainly a little eye-opening. Is it more than just a game? A whole service? Perhaps finally Steam Cloud Gaming, their own streaming service? Or, a service attached to a game somehow.

TBH sounds more like a game than anything else (hardware, service etc.), but it's a weird name overall. Very hard to think of anything. There is certain other company with a service named *Prime but it doesn't fit any of Valve's potential products. Maybe it's just a codename, but then why file for a tm?

Actually at first I thought of a cloud platform, but "downloadable games" didn't fit, so I drifted in another direction. But sure enough, there's yet another application for the same name: https://uspto.report/TM/97625459 with a broader set of categories, including "providing online video games; provision of on-line entertainment, namely, on-line computer games; providing on-line computer games and on-line video games; electronic games services provided by means of the Internet; providing information in the fields of computer games and entertainment via the Internet; organization of competitions relating to video games, video game education, and video game entertainment; providing information in the field of on-line computer games and on-line video games and computer games." which would actually fit very well!

Fun fact: tm application for "steam deck" was filed on 14.07.2021, just a day or two before opening preorders. So maybe we'll see some announcement about neon prime soon?

Only a gaming console can have a name like this :).
(In fact, it actually does sound somewhat like “Neo Geo”)

I certainly hope it's not a game streaming service for the Deck. Please, no…

Could it be...
Counter-Strike:Neon Prime? Or Half-Life:Neon Prime? I'm not sure how trademarks work tbh...

I'm no expert, but my understanding is that you wouldn't typically trademark a subtitle on its own.

It could be Citadel? Citadel was always just a code name.

Citadel is supposed to be a multiplayer game, set in the Half Life universe, and is a hybrid of an FPS with Moba elements. Basically I imagine will be like Dota 2, but as a sci-fi first person shooter.

Sounds like a sub service of some sort.

Here is another link: https://uspto.report/TM/97625459

I don't think it's a game. This is some kind of service.

Hmmm... Neon Prime... Prme... Valve are obviously obsessed with the 2007 cult classic fps Alpha Prime by Black Element Software/Bohemia Interactive and are working on a Half-Life/Alpha-Prime crossover!

(Admit it, if Gordon Freeman had a voice he would sound exactly like Paolo Bellini!)

I dunno, I think that the rendition from Half-Life: Full Life Consequences will always spring to mind first, for me.

It is going to be a streaming service. I know we don't like streaming services, but I'm calling it now, steaming service.

You know what's awesome for streaming services? NOT FPS games!!! No, turn-based games. Perfect match for game streaming.

My money is that Index 2 will be called Neon Prime and essentially be a all-in-one VR Headset running SteamOS v3 / v4.

To me the name Neon is a reference to the early days of Vector based video games and the Nintendo VR headset of the 80s/90s and The Neon Age. And Prime "an integer greater than 1 whose only factors are 1 and itself."

Therefore the Neon Prime IMO will be the name for Index 2, but it will be different than Index in the same way the Steam Deck is analogous to the Steam Controller v2.

Valve has a hard-on for innovation and new technical achievements & voyaging into new consumer spaces -- and so they never really make the same thing twice (Although I fully expect to see another Steam Living Room Console, and series of SteamOS products like GDP Win and other manufacturers that want to join the SteamDeck hype party.)

I could be wrong, but this is the best guess from my "gut" feeling.

maybe its because valve is infamous for not knowing how to count to 3 and having "valve time" maybe this branch will be different and work under a different schedule, culture/organization instead of the "anarchy" described by some valve employees...

Neon Steam Deck skin for Valve games exclusive to Steam Deck owners. get a deck download game login play 10 minutes or so and get free gift :p
derram Oct 15, 2022
Hmm, that update makes me think it's not a game. Thinking about it and how Valve does naming, where does "Neon" fit with Valve's current line up?

The Deck. All of their Deck profile stuff has been Neon themed.

I'm gonna put my bet down on a website dedicated to Deck stuff. We might finally be getting a way to share game settings.

The DOTA trademark is also listed as International Code 41 (the "entertainment services" one).
