Possibly one of the most promising retro-styled FPS games coming to Linux, Selaco is getting a huge demo upgrade next month. Built with GZDoom, it's ridiculously impressive with so much going on it's hard to believe it's using that game engine.

Selaco is a brand new original shooter running on GZDoom, featuring thrilling action set pieces, destructibility, smart AI and a fleshed out story taking place within an immersive game world. It draws inspiration heavily from F.E.A.R. in terms of action set pieces, while mixing traditional retro-FPS elements from QUAKE and DOOM, along with some more modern features. Together with professional artists who work in the industry, several having worked on successful throwback FPS games in the past, Selaco is a fully fleshed out world full of character, action, and mystery.

Arriving on December 16th, here's what's coming to the updated demo:

  • Full gamepad & Steam deck Support
  • Level-design Enhancements
  • Hundreds of Quality of Life Improvements
  • Improved AI
  • Rebalanced Gameplay
  • Art Pass
  • Performance Optimizations

I cannot wait to get my hands on this. The initial demo was very impressive and a lot of fun to play, and these upgrades to it sound quite fantastic.

Follow it on Steam.

I didn't see any similarity to FEAR, maybe it's more noticeable when playing.

But it really looks good

From playing the previous Demo, its mostly the enemy behaviour that's inspired by FEAR. The enemies react to your flashlight, the light level of the room and they try to flank you.

How do you get it to run? I installed in my Arch install and all 3 versions immediately fail and bring be back to the Play button... Dont see any logs either.

There is a gigantic difference between being inspired by something and being a copy. We're not trying to be like F.E.A.R. and never claimed to be, we are our very own game.

We only take heavy inspirations from F.E.A.R.'s combat philosophies and a few other smaller homages.

This looks so cool...... I will have to give this demo at go at some point........

If you want something to look like FEAR, everything has to be concrete. Followed by concrete and concrete. And a bit of cardboard. FEAR's visuals are very limited.

I'm not sure if I will play Selaco on the Steam Deck – my experiments with Hands of Necromancy weren't that successful, but more options are good. I'm currently trying Binary Domain and I'm struggling with aiming switching between the stick and the track pad. Mouse aiming is a lot easier (although Binary Domain is famous for a horrible hard-wired mouse acceleration).

I have to revisit the demo.. I was getting crushed on whatever difficulty setting I was playing on

It's refreshing to see someone making a game like this with a Single Player campaign these days.

Count me in on December 16 (and hopefully when it's ready for purchase)

Sigh, reading comprehension... I spotted "arriving on December 16th" assumed it was the full version and got all excited!

Oh well... great shooters come to those who wait?

Is this a narrative on rails story shooter or a Open-World Story shooter? do you live in the world or just follow a preset line of leveled missions? Just bit confused as to what it offers other then obvious stuff.
