The work going into the open source Mesa graphics drivers continues on, with AMD Ray Tracing picking up speed and they're going to enable Quake II RTX and Doom Eternal support by default now.

Currently you can turn it on manually, but now they're moving to add specific games known to work into a list. These two games are just the start. On the GitLab Merge Request, developer Bas Nieuwenhuizen noted in reply to a question on why just these and why not default for all:

Because it is not ready, in particular we're missing Daniel's shader calling work and some more game debugging.
However, it feels worth it to start enabling some games we know to work, so that people can start playing.

This work should be available in Mesa 23.0 due later this year.

It's nice to see some more movement on this, as it's been a long time coming for those sticking with the open source Mesa drivers.

This and other news was covered in my recent News Flip video.

I ran GravityMark's Vulkan Ray Tracing benchmark on an overclocked RX 6800 (via CoreCtrl), and here is the best result I got:

Nice timing! Just when I ordered a new (okay, not sooo new, Rx 6700 XT) GPU with dedicated ray-tracing support.

What does this mean? Do the proprietary drivers already have ray-tracing support?

I still always think "tray-racing".

So, to try it out today, compile/install mesa-git (23.x)?

Nice! The first fruits of what I have been waiting for with Steam Deck!! ♥️🥂

Can't wait to see this pick up steam (no pun intended...althoooouuuuugh)! 😂

Bought the game on steam on the last sale. I own an Radeon RX 6700XT and Doom Eternal is the first game that gives me playable results with raytracing enabled. I play the game with Ultra quality at 1080p. The RX 6700 XT is to weak to deliver playable performance in most raytracing games, this one however works very well.
