It's not going to win any awards on style but some of you may want to know that the classic free and open source RPG FreedroidRPG is now on Steam. A name some older readers might not have seen for a while…

This is a game I remember reading about and following along back in the early days, way before Steam came to Linux and when Wine couldn't exactly run a whole lot. It might not be up to modern standards in many ways but fun to see it continue on. Linux has obviously come a very long way as a gaming platform with so many games available to play either Native or through Proton.

I have to admit a penguin slapping robots is quite amusing.

More about it from the developers: "Freedroid aims to provide a popular reference game in the open-source world. Our goal is to do so through the implementation of an immersive world with distinctive dialog and graphical styles in a format that is friendly to all ages while providing a fair amount of choice to the player. In view of this, we rely on high quality literary content to provide entertainment and emotional investment as well as educational benefits."

Find it on Steam and the official site.

Why anyone should play this?

I played it long ago, kinda like a Diablo clone, iirc. Not exactly my cup of tea, but not bad

Oh man, i remember playing this way back in the day. It was fun for what we had at the time. I might give it another shot.

I really like FreeDroid (and FreeDroidRPG), having been a huge fan of Andrew Braybrook's original Paradroid.

This RPG variant shows all its age (a Tux look-alike hero, nerd puns galore, dated graphics borrowed from the 80s, cheesy gameplay, some story gems, etc.), but it can be entertaining and even challenging. Think of a "reverse retrogaming" experiment done with some passion and a lot of perseverance.

Wouldn't break any sale record, but it's nice to have available to a wider audience than some obscure package buried in the "extras" of linux distros.

I remember the name, but I don't think I ever played it. Cool it's on Steam, though!

I like seeing when an old (F)OSS game is made available or---at the very least---put in front of Steam's millions of eyes, worldwide. Pre-Steam, my Linux games of choice---nobody's asking, I know---was Blob Wars: Metal Blob Solid, a solid little game with tremendous charm and wit. Well, and ABUSE of course. ;)

Looks like a FOSS mashup of Diablo and Fallout from the screenshots. Interesting enough to give it a go. Nice to see they use Codeberg and have an App Image.

Well, if you read the developer blurb, you would know it was created as a reference game. It's not something you'd wave at your Windows friends and say, "Look what we have here!"

But I have to admit the archaic animation does remind me of Zomboid... which then made me realize the similarity of titles. Huh.
