It's early days for the game yet with it in Early Access but SurrounDead could be a promising one to play online with some friends.

From the description and footage shown from the developer, it looks like an odd blending of DayZ and Project Zomboid. However, it also seems to be heavily inspired by another called DeadPoly which is lesser known than the two aforementioned bigger games but if you've seen that you'll know what to expect.

What makes this different then? Why am I mentioning it? Well, I initially thought it actually had a Native Linux version whereas DeadPoly does not. It has the SteamOS icon on Steam but checking SteamDB, there's no Linux content or launch configuration. Only after I checked the system requirements, did I spot something that's somewhat unique, as it directly lists Proton for Linux as what they support.

It might not exactly be the first time, my memory escapes me on who did it first, but it's in the single digits on the number of developers noting support being official for Proton in this way so I thought it was interesting to highlight.

Game Features:

  • Travel through a desolate post apocalyptic landscape.
  • Fight zombies and possibly worse.
  • Find many different firearms, melee weapons and equipment.
  • Trade with survivors in trader hideouts or safe zones to get that one piece of equipment you need.
  • Barricade buildings or find your self somewhere in the wilderness to escape to.
  • Loot varied locations to improve yourself, but be aware of your surroundings.
  • Weather and day/night cycles, be careful.
  • Manage your stats to stay alive.

Available on Steam.

I actually did review this game as "not recommended", and while it is good (assuming exploration and base building is a key interest to you), the game feels lacking in many other areas.

It shows promise in its current state, and it rather depends on how much you can ignore the existing issues of AI and how much you enjoy the base building/hoarding loot (seemingly pointlessly)

It seems like a low-poly version of 7 days to die. could be interesting. then again, I always burn out in 7dtd really quick as I can only hoard/build so long with no really storyline goal.

Nice, hopefully them 'supporting' Proton means they'll be testing on it (and not introducing breaking changes or performance regressions in their code), rather than just freeloading on the community+Valve.

That gives me an idea. Something a little larger scale . . . imagine a slightly further post-zombie-apocalypse where you have a typical top-down town/castle/kingdom builder, but the point is that you're trying to clear and keep the zombies out of larger and larger territories and build back the human population.

Tbh, right now it comes across as a worse and paid version of unturned, or a I missing something here

I'm excited that this is being built and advertised as being Proton compatible, something I expect we'll only see more of moving forward---especially as the Steam Deck grows ever more popular.

I'm also pretty keen on good sandbox-survival-crafting-open-world-exploration-base building game (a sub-genre without a good name, it seems). Also a sub-genre with a LOT of bad, buggy, incomplete titles (especially of the "horror" variety) such that when a Valheim, Unturned, or a 7D2D comes along, it really is a treat. Only time will tell whether Surroundead will become something special or forgettable, but choosing to build for Proton? I'm routing for it.

Had purchased this a while ago and luckily it was empty enough for me to notice that fact within steam's refund window. Fell for the marketing...unless it isn't marketing and they will eventually fill the game with content?
