Trackmania, the 2020 remake, is heading to Steam and the developers have started answering questions like — will it run on Steam Deck?

Even more Ubisoft coming back to Steam, what a treat. Following on from earlier Steam releases of Ghost Recon Breakpoint, The Division 2, Immortals Fenyx Rising and Assassin's Creed Valhalla. From Ubisoft Nadeo, it will be free to play when it hits Steam on February 2nd, so you can bet I'll be giving it to a go so you know what to expect on Steam Deck and Linux desktop.

Speaking on Twitter in their thread answering questions, they mentioned about the Steam Deck: "2. Can I play Trackmania with my Steam Deck? We are still waiting for the official review for Steam Deck from Valve to know if it is possible. From our tests, the game is playable on the device.". Nice to see some more official testing being done! Would be good to see more of that from Ubisoft and others.

Why are Ubisoft coming back to Steam? The answer is clear: money talks. Ubisoft want more of it, and clearly they're not doing as well as they would like as mentioned in their recent financial statement from CEO Yves Guillemot: "We are clearly disappointed by our recent performance. We are facing contrasted market dynamics as the industry continues to shift towards mega-brands and everlasting live games, in the context of worsening economic conditions affecting consumer spending.".

[…]in the context of worsening economic conditions affecting consumer spending
While energy prices and inflation certainly aren’t helping, I think the anti-consumerism that tends to drive Ubisoft’s decisions is the main factor of fading customers/declining sales.

[…]the industry continues to shift towards […] everlasting live games
No, it does not.

It'll still launch Ubisoft Connect, sadly... Nadeo confirmed it on Twitter.

Edit: I've been playing Trackmania 2020 for months now on my Deck. I just installed Ubisoft Connect with the help of Proton and it works flawlessly on my end.

Ah Yves Guillemot... Am I the only one to have read the sentence with his accent?

Shameless self-quote

In case Yves Guillemot is reading this, I base my opinion on EA’s 180 on live services.
I would say EA is Ubisoft’s main competitor.

I have never played this game, but it reminded me Maniadrive.
It has a Linux version, and I spent many hours playing it.
I still listen to songs from this game.

Well that was all I need to know. I've been avoiding them since they never did a Linux version, and now that I know they bundle 3rd party launcher spyware crapware -- the turnoff has gone sub-zero.

It's too bad they don't have analysts that actually read these comments otherwise they may be something other than tone-deaf and conscious enough to make products that people actually want.

The more the internet gets threatened and always-on is pushed the more I appreciate GOG, DRM-Free and Offline games with LAN too. I can't even imagine investing hundreds or thousands of hours into something only to have the centralized server shut down.

These are problems that were solved in 1999. It's just the cement brains at the top have the attention span of a gold fish.

Good to see. At least it's coming for Steam, after the release announced for Stadia has now fallen through:

Aaaand with that i lost all interest.
Get your shit together ubisoft, nobody wants an utterly useless additional launcher that doesn't offer even a hint of additional value.

Even EA seems to slowly get it - the Dead Space Remake apparently comes without the EA App!
If you are even worse than EA, you are clearly on the wrong path...

I have been playing Trackmania United on and off since it's launch in 2008. Theres still a good community of players thanks to the free version of the game Trackmania Nations Forever that brings people in. It didn't always work perfectly with wine because of problems with audio (which have since been fixed), but in the last couple of years I got back into playing it and have sunk 1,400 hours into it

I think ManiaDrive is an open source clone of the original TrackMania, which (I guess) got the idea from the Brøderbund game Stunts.

Unfortunately, the original TrackMaina is impossible to run using Wine because of the [StarForce protection](), which also makes it impossible to run on modern versions of Windows. So the only way to run it now is by using a VM running Windows XP (or similar).

I guess it should be possible to get accelerated graphics in an old VM using Zink or DXVK, but I haven't investigated if it's possible to do with Windows XP. Another way is of course to use GPU passthrough, but I guess new GPU's don't get XP drivers.

From the assets and environment my favourite part of the series was TM: Sunrise

I get that we all hate launchers, but please be mindful of the forum rules when expressing your (entirely understandable) anger/frustration. Thanks all.

Yes, it's a clone of Trackmania.

However, I didn't play the original TrackMania, so I couldn't compare them.
It was much more fun playing Maniadrive as something new to me on Linux.

BTW, it's a song from Maniadrive.

I played a lot of the very first Trackmania, before it was a success, with PowerUp it was a real blast. Then i played almost all Trackmania games, but i could never find the same... spirit ? It went from fun and ideas, to competition and rewards. Sunrise was great too actually.
