Giving you another easy way to download and keep it up to date, the Dolphin Emulator for GameCube and Wii is coming to Steam. Even though it's going to be on Steam, they don't dare mention Nintendo directly on the Steam page: "Dolphin is an emulator for the big N's 6th and 7th generation consoles, featuring enhancements such as increased resolution, save states, and netplay."

In their official blog post, they said to expect a feature article going over the features of the Steam release later, as this has been a "product of many months of work". This will make getting it on Steam Deck easier than ever, and they've even confirmed it will support Cloud Saves too.

Naturally, the Steam release is just the emulator, you will still need to have your own copy of games to run in it.

They haven't given an exact date, other than the plan is to have it in Early Access on Steam by the end of 2023. They're going with Early Access as some Steam specific features aren't finished yet, plus they want to gather feedback on what people want from the Steam release.

You can follow it on Steam.

The amusing thing is that actually it should.
Like, if they embraced the whole deal and stuck a bunch of their games on Steam with a big fanfare they might sell a lot of games with almost zero cost to them.
But we know they won't.

Nintendo's business model has always been "You buy Nintendo consoles to play Nintendo games." You're never going to see Mario officially appear in a game on a non-Nintendo platform.

Somebody needs to make a GameCube JetPack Mini Disc DVD-Rom for Steam Deck and people can literally throw game cube discs into the drive on the back of the Steam Deck.

That'd be hilarious, and fitting.

It seems a bit odd to me to make it a little bit more convenient to download the emulator by adding it to Steam, when the big hurdle is making legal copies of the games to be able to use it at all. Although I guess it's a way to get some more visibility, and even if they end up being taken off Steam, that's probably going to be OK too, since then it will be newsworthy in the wider gaming press. Attention doesn't hurt, even for an open source project, so maybe it's mostly a marketing move.

I think this is doable with an external disc drive and PS1 & PS2 games.
