Marble It Up! gets Native Linux support in Beta

By -

Up for a challenge? Marble-rolling platformer Marble It Up! just recently gained Native Linux support in a Beta.

Announced by game porter and FNA developer Ethan Lee on Twitter, you'll need to force the Steam Linux Runtime on Steam Deck to get it to download after opting into the Beta. On Desktop Linux, just installing it with the Beta selected should be fine.

Developed by the minds behind the Marble Blast series, if any of you are familiar with that.

  • The Collectibles - Over 100 unique marbles are just waiting to be collected! Complete chapters, earn medals, find hidden trophies, and play Weekly Challenges to grow your magnificent marble collection! Play for keeps!
  • The Challenges - All new game mode: Weekly Challenges. Every week, we break our own rules on a select set of maps. Low gravity? Double jump? No powerups? How about all three? Compete each week for rewards!

  • The Community - The Steam Workshop is overflowing with fantastic user-made maps from our talented, passionate, and dedicated community! Over 200 levels are roll-ready and available with a few simple clicks!

Currently noted as Unsupported by Valve on Steam Deck, perhaps this work in the upcoming update and Native Linux port will help bring it up to Verified.

Hahahahahahaha! (I have a few more of those little fellas in clear colours than just Clear Red, by the way. Clear plastic is still totally 1990s cool and I'll not hear otherwise. )

Seriously, though, this reminds me more of a combination of the marble-puzzles in New Super Lucky's Tale, Super Monkey Ball, and, of course, Marble Madness.

Playing this game is what I imagined playing Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was on Sega Genesis as a kid.

I have a hard time keeping interest in things, but I was really surprised after like 4 hours how addictive and fun this game is.

Now that I have 4 Steam Decks gifted to family I am really curious what the LAN Gaming would be like playing this game in multiplayer.

Fond memories of Monkeyball on my GameCube, and then the incredible motion-sensitive Super Monkeyball sequel on the Wii. This game is giving off a great vibe!

Great!

It looks like a great game that I want to play on Linux.

However, it would be cool if they could port the DRM-free version of Marble Blast Gold to Linux.

PlatinumQuest works well in WINE. To download it, grab the macOS version of the launcher, extract the ZIP, `cd` to `Marble Blast Lauincher.app` then run `java -jar Contents/Java/MBLauncher.jar` (you need to have a JRE installed, JDK is not required). The launcher will download the Windows version to a folder in your home directory, which can then be run in WINE.

PlatinumQuest includes all Marble Blast Gold levels, while also having much more features such as online multiplayer and support for texture packs.

There's also Marble Blast Web, which is a pure JavaScript + WebGL game that can load Marble Blast Gold levels. It's not a port of the original code, but rewritten from the ground up.

Thanks.

I didn't know that PlatinumQuest includes all Marble Blast Gold levels.

I mentioned the Linux version because I was expecting more users be interested in playing it.

However, I can use Wine to install a Windows version if later I can run a Linux version. In this case, I will have to use Wine to play it. I always avoid using Wine/Proton because Windows is a better option.

I tried a web version, but a Haxe port of Marble Blast would give me a better experience playing it.

Unfortunately, it's not the official game. It's annoying that they re-released this game only for Windows and Mac.
