The Wine 8.4 development release is out now for this Windows translation layer, part of what makes Steam Play Proton tick. Every two weeks (ish), they put out a new release with the latest code like this. Once a year they then produce a stable version. We're currently waiting to see when Valve upgrade Proton to the 8 series, no word on it yet.
Here's the highlights of Wine 8.4:
- Initial step of the Wayland graphics driver.
- Cleanups in IME support.
- A number of test fixes.
- Various bug fixes.
For the bug fixes they mentioned issues solved for: Thief: The Dark Project, Hard Truck 2: King of The Road, Amazon Games Client, SPORE, WRC 4: FIA World Rally Championship, Crysis 2 Maximum Edition, Starcraft Remastered and more.

This wine staging version in my case restore some wmv playback in some titles
Case WRC4 works main menu video but dont intro videos, curiously both videos are wmv3 but only difference can stay around audio because intro videos have audio appear as wmapro

And in render compared nvidia, car paint appear correctly without black areas

However audio have strange issue in track, when stay all public sound bad but once leave begin point audio back to normal in my case
Another interesting result is in test drive ferrari legends
when sky appear correctly meanwhile with nvidia appear in black in my case

God eater resurrection also have wmv3 cinematics with audio in wmapro and dont play too, same history occur with ultra street fighter IV and street fighter vs tekken
And in my case fix nascar thunder 2003 with d8vk, in before wine version only show 3dconfig app but dont entry in game

Nice to see Wayland patches finally starting to land. It's not usable yet, but it's getting there. Once they merge all the major parts, it would be interesting to re-test.

Seeking more in depth wrc 4 videos, is curious how h264 format give some interesting ideas about wmv files
without forget troubles with h264 on wine until recent times
but experimenting and then i think about reencode (avidemux - handbrake and qwinff) video in h264 but with audio in mp3 128kb but encode in stereo aka 2ch (apparently wine have troubles with wmapro in this videos: 6ch at 384kb/s)
with mp4 container but once stay ready only change .mp4 extension to .wmv
and produce this:

yeah curiously video are reencode in h264 with sound in mp3, if you play on any video player program on linux case smplayer video have sound
but in game dont sound anything, maybe wine have pŕoblem with muxers

Thanks, I guess it's time to re-install these games and play around with handbrake. Lately I've been trying to get a few game videos working with wine staging and have had some success.

them wine devs make many changes since 7.2x series when in my case begin dont work wmv files
another title saved thanks to h264+mp3 this is night at the museum 2, this game have many cinematics in wmv with audio in wmapro and some this cinematics stay in some menus
