Update: Valve developer Pierre-Loup Griffais mentioned on Twitter it’s for the upcoming Star Wars Jedi Survivor.

Here's something interesting for you. Valve developers seem to be improving the Mesa graphics drivers right now towards a secret game. First noticed by Phoronix, developer Samuel Pitoiset has been working on improvements in Mesa for the RADV driver (AMD Vulkan). This is the driver used by most for gaming on AMD + desktop Linux and also the Steam Deck.

In a merge request from April 18th, one of the commits noted there was an improvement to "a depth-only pass by +35% in one upcoming game". Another one from April 19th notes it gives another performance improvement of around 10% in "that game" (continuing to be rather cryptic). Then from April 20th there's another and when you read into the comments, Pitoiset notes it's "again this upcoming (secret) game" that was pointed out by SadlyItsBradley on Twitter.

Initially, I thought perhaps it was just going to be preparations for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and they just didn't want to name the game of a partner they were testing for because it's coming soon. However, the continued secrecy around it and even saying directly it's a "secret" definitely now has my curiosity piqued.

Do we think this is a new Valve game? It would make sense that Valve have their people working on performance improvements, and not naming it because then the internet would go wild. Perhaps Left 4 Dead 3 that was spotted being named in Counter Strike 2 files? Perhaps finally Half-Life 3 (yeah likely not but I can dream).

Pure speculation of course and it may not be a Valve game at all. It really could actually just be a game they're testing for a third-party, as we know Valve do get to do driver fixes and Proton fixes at times before a game releases on Steam so it's ready for Steam Deck. Either way, it seems we'll eventually find out on this one…

OMG Half Life 3 confirmed...

Lol!!

Honestly what surprised me more was that GOL was on Twitter. I thought they moved on from it in December? Oh well, I know GOL is free to change it's mind, I just didn't realize it until now (guess I'm slow on the uptake, lol)

me neither, i mean, i dont think it will be a great game (if it ever relase) it will be full of mtx.
but anyway, it will be a huge relase despite that, will make tons of money for valve so it make sense the secrecy

HL3 couldn't be anything but disappointing. In The Valley Of Gods is what I'm dreaming of. Of course that probably wouldn't need aggressive driver performance optimisations.

I fear they've just been assimilated. Has there anything on Twitter or the like about the game?

No, no, the optimizations are all for the launcher. It will run great! The game? Who knows.

Half rant:

I remember the time that a colleague invested a lot of time for a bug report towards Microsoft about an SNA library, complete with instructions on how to fix the library, as these fixes were necessary for certification of the total (banking) solution.
The last I heard from him was that it took more than 6 months for a reply. I already left there. And the reply was: thank you, we acknowledge this is an issue, and we are going to look at in the future. Nobody profited from that, except Microsoft. As they could easily ignore certified technology partners, and still charge them hefty Microsoft tax.

And now people/companies are working together to fix bugs and optimize render paths and *everyone* and every company profits (monetary wise), including those that co-operated on fixing that, because their primary product is "that game" or "the console", and the buyers are those that buy "the console" to play "that game". That's bringing tears to my eyes.
Even GDP wins if they put an AMD inside with Linux Arch or SteamOS.

Not as far as I know; the band got split up for HL:A, and then not much. But I think the game would be really good, and super sweet on the Deck, so I'm holding out hope that they get round to it one day.
