How to use it?

You can select Proton 8 in the Properties -> Compatibility menu of any game when you tick the box. See more in the Steam Play beginner's guide article. You can also search for "Proton 8" directly in your Steam Library to install it manually.

Note: it requires a GPU that supports Vulkan 1.3 (Steam Deck is fine).

Full changelog can be found on GitHub.

Update 18/04/23 - 18:36 UTC: Valve pushed out a hotfix to Proton 8 fix a crash on startup with Dark Souls games.

Linux gaming marches forward, Valve waving the flag, contributors in the thousands shoulder to shoulder in formation stepping together. Deck in hand, I cheer from the sidelines as they continue with steady progress.

Which of the alt-tab bugs did they fix? The one where you alt tab and then can't alt-tab back into the game? Or the one where if you stay alt-tabbed at some point all input stops responding?

Seems EA launcher is still broken for me. Can't play Battlefront II since it dropped.

Age of Empires 2 DE is broken on this release. If you try to open it, first you'll see a crash report, then an Xbox login window will appear, then turn completely white and won't go away, effectively blocking and preventing you from playing (I was playing with experimental before and this didn't happen).

Only way to get around this is to go offline to open the game.

Oh no! Well, I'll be waiting for 8.1 in that case. Glad I can still run AOE2:DE in an older version of proton.

Are new versions of Proton could break the compatibility with different games more frequently than new versions of Wine?

So... is Proton experimental now based on Proton 8, or is it still at 7? I'm not sure how I'd check?

Edit - Based on this, it looks like it's still v7.
