Want to play the classic Heroes of Might and Magic II on modern platforms, with plenty of enhancements? Well the fheroes2 just keeps getting better - now with widescreen support.

The project has been going for a while now, covered here on GamingOnLinux a few times. Another great FOSS project that revives a classic game but with significant improvements from gameplay to graphics, AI upgrades, UI improvements and so on.

The latest release from May 13th adds (changelog):

  • Add widescreen resolutions support and update scaled resolution support
  • Add Polish and Russian languages support for Virtual Keyboard
  • Add missing post-victory map ratings
  • Improve AI logic towards collection of needed resources for kingdom and interaction with several Adventure map objects
  • Fix multiple logical and rendering issues during battles
  • Over 40 bugs are fixed since 1.0.3 release

Available to download on GitHub. You do also need to grab the data from GOG.com which it requires to run.

Is it better than HoMM3? It looks better, but what about gameplay?

It's very similar, except units and factions are a bit different. Not as deep, no as balanced, but it has very good soundtrack and it's own rythm and design. Story is deliberatly cliché in a good way (voice acting pretty good in my language: french) I quite like it. I'm doing the backward way. Went from 3 to 2, and next I'm gonna purchase the first episode, and maybe 4 & 5 after :)

I played 3, 4 and 5, a lot, but at different times. I played only a little bit of the 2. I tried a bit the 6th, it was pretty bad though, but maybe I will give it another chance in the future. The 3 is still my favorite by far.
The 5 is pretty like the 3 but with "3D" graphics for me, so at the time I discovered it I though it was the perfect game for a time, but you know what it's like to try something new...
As for the 4... be prepared, as the gameplay have tons of changes compared to the 3... some hate it, some love it.

But I disagree on "It looks better", the 3 looks gorgeous to me. ^^ For me the 2 has nice graphics but it tell its age.

I like more pixel-y esthetics and I just think that 3 is overrated and overhyped. But I played tons of 3 as well, ☺️

Heroes 2 has a gorgeous pixel art made by professional artists for NWC. Pixel art ages not so noticeably, comparing to 3d pre-rendered art of Heroes 3. It has its charm and animations are detailed and nice. Anyway, all Heroes 1-5 games look awesome.
Speaking of gameplay, Heroes 2 is not really different from later series. It has a few less skills, factions, artifacts but even experienced players of later series are enjoying HoMM2. The lack of content is going to be fixed in the upcoming fheroes2 expansion, which is planned to bring a bunch of new objects, creatures and game mechanics.

I don't think we can call it pixel art, strictly, for Heroes II, it's just older than Heroes III but the reason is not the style itself. I think Heroes III ages much better, I think mainly because of colors choices.
But just to not be misunderstood, I like the graphics of Heroes II too, it's just different, we can like both.

Anyway thanks again for this great project!
