Brotato is something just a little bit special isn't it? Blobfish have managed to craft something that really stands out in a sea of twin-stick bullet-hell vampire survivor-likes that keep flowing. Note: this was a personal purchase.

What we have here is a timed wave-based survival bullet-hell where you pick your potato and have at it. Saying it's anything like Vampire Survivors just isn't doing it any real justice though. There are plenty of similarities here of course but it's still very much its own game. Mechanically simple with you picking a character (and there's quite a few), each with their own buffs and debuffs, and then just lasting as long as possible.

Very much a game to zone-out with. It doesn't take a lot of brain power, it's a perfect game for when you have a few minutes spare and perfect on the go with a Steam Deck too. Officially only available for Windows, it works perfectly with Proton on desktop Linux and Steam Deck.

You might think it doesn't take a long of brain power, and you could even say such a game is "turn your brain off fun" but actually — it's the opposite. Once you get a few waves in, it's tough and pure unhinged chaos. As you power up through the level-up system giving you buffs and new weapons, it trickles in many different types of enemies that will be constantly making you move. Brotato will make you sweat where there should be no sweat, your thumbs will ache like mad but there will be a big smile on your face. That is, until you die when you've really got a sweet setup.

Just today I fired it up for another "quick" run to double-check the release build was all good and ended up getting sucked into a full run again. I had such an awesome weapon set too with turrets everywhere, more turrets spawning constantly, and I thought I was close to immortality. But, it doesn't take long for a few stray enemy bullets and a couple of speedy creatures to end you if you're not careful.

It's hard to find a fault with it. The developer took a simple idea and kept on building on it and it's about as close to perfection as you can get for the simple mechanics it offers. So it's no surprise that it has an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam and it's currently the 99th best user-reviewed game on Steam of all time.

In the 1.0 release they added in 5 new elite enemies, 6 new characters, 7 new weapons, 6 new items and 12 new challenges. So even if you're one of the people who've already spent a good 100+ hours in it, you're going to find something new and fun in your next few runs.

Priced at only £3.99 it's an absolute steal at full price. An absolute gem and one of my favourites. I highly recommend checking it out so go buy it on Steam.

My wife likes it, since the 60s rounds mean I'm available on much shorter notice compared to ~15 min rounds in WarThunder

Addicting as hell, the only thing that would make this game better is a native Linux port. It uses the Godot Engine so it isn't outside of the realm of possibility in the future.
