Xonotic 0.8.6 is an essential upgrade for anyone playing this classic free and open source arena shooter, due to a security issue but there's also plenty of new features and additions.

If you've never played it Xonotic is an arena-style first person shooter, with fast-paced movement and gameplay plus a wide array of weapons. It's completely free and has full Native Linux support. Developed as a fork of a previous game called Nexuiz.

The new release brings in two new official maps, a few tweaks to existing maps, performance optimizations, lots of bug fixes (and security fixes), a new "superbots" AI that are really tough to fight against, new moderation systems, upgrades to various visual effects and some new game modes that sound like a lot of fun.

New game modes include:

  • Mayhem - Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch where players spawn with all weapons and full health / armour. Score is given 75% based on damage and 25% based on frags.
  • Survival - A few randomly selected players must frag all survivors, without being identified.
  • Team Keepaway - A team variant of the free for all, where points are awarded to the team in possession of a ball for each kill.

Wow, this is a blast from the past! I spent so much time playing deathmatch in Nexiuz, probably more than 15 years ago now. For a couple of years it was the only game I played, knew most of the dev team (even then it was a small community), even made a couple of online friends.

Every time you killed someone in Nexiuz deathmatch, the game would say something like "one frag", "two frags", etc. My daughters, who were toddlers at the time, didn't understand the word "frag", so they would run to their mother yelling "Moooommmm! Baba is shooting Franks again!" To this day, my wife calls my gaming time "shooting Franks"!

Great game, and a blast from the past. Here's hoping that it experiences a resurgence.

Yes, Xonotic is IMO the best open source FPS ever, and I really appreciate to see some more effort going into it.

I forgot about this classic; next you'll tell me Warsaw has added a BR mode.
