I have to admit I am a little bit excited by this. Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 is now confirmed to be coming to Steam. So we could be playing classic Metal Gear on Linux desktop and Steam Deck with Proton very soon.

The collection will release on October 24th and include Metal Gear Solid (including VR / Special Missions), MGS 2: Sons of Liberty (HD Collection version) and MGS 3: Snake Eater (HD Collection version)) as the main games. Plus extras of Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Metal Gear (NES/FC version) and Snake's Revenge.

This was confirmed in an official video:

I have such fond memories of playing Metal Gear Solid on the original PlayStation. Being able to play them easily (hopefully) thanks to Proton on my desktop or on the go with my Steam Deck is going to be pretty great.

Will you be picking it up?

I'm excited too! But mainly for the extras, I must admit (I loved Metal Gear Solid, but its follow-ups were never of interest to me) - it's always nice to see the MSX games get some more spotlight, and the included digital graphic-novel and guides look good, too.

I was excited when I heard the rumours, but I'm concerned that this is just a re-release of the same content already available on PC. I think a lot of us have been looking forward to a MGS remake for a long time and Konami doesn't seem to be willing to do anything about it. At this point I'm concerned this won't be just a set of emulators with locked down settings providing a worse overall experience.

"Snake? Answer me snake! Snakeeeeeee!!!!" I remember those screams from mgs1 really well when snake died. It was a great game to play with ps1. And what about metal gear 1 and 2? A great stuff at the time. So Valve, here's all my money!
Err I mean I will buy this collection as soon as possible without spending all my fortune on it. It would be disastrous.

Metal Gear Solid 3 has never been available on PC. There is also a remake on the making for Metal Gear Solid 3 (perhaps not the remake people wanted), and there are rumours that is only the first of the main trilogy because it makes sense chronologically. The code in the Konami's website apparently* shows that there will also be a Master Collection 2 including the never released on PC MGS4.

I also think Konami is full of crap, but saying things that aren't true won't help anybody.

Last, but not least, I'm always puzzled with the community expecting some remakes, and giving more importance to them that to new titles, like if was the only way for them to enjoy a game. Let's not allow companies dictate when is good to replay a game :(

* I say apparently because a few people said it on a Discord chat, but I haven't been able to find it.

EDIT: I'll be picking it up. Even though I find the €60 mark, in some console markets, very expensive.

The best news was going to the Konami website and reading that the regional voice translations made for MGS will be available as a separate download for free. These are not available on GoG.

I'm disappointed with this. For me it's just a quick cash-grab release with zero effort at all.
They could have used the GC version of MGS1 (The twin snakes) as a base. And then the 3DS version for snake eater with all the qol changes. Instead we just get a collection of roms with some visual novels slapped in to make us believe it's "good value".

Good for you if you like it, but not for me, I'm not gonna give Konami money for this lazy collection (although considering the quality of most collection nowadays, I have to say this one is not the worst I've seen).

For me MGS went on a downhill path. MGS was the best, then MGS 2, then MGS 3, then MGS 4, and then MGS V which I couldn't even complete. Every release was worse than the one before. With every release the story gets more and more complicated, and the gameplay changes between releases make them sometimes feel like different games rather than a continuation of the same game. MGS 3 gameplay is quite different from MGS, MGS 2 has a different protagonist, while MGS V is open world! It feels like Konami looks out in the market for whatever is currently hot among players and puts it in an MGS game. Compare that to Uncharted and you'll understand what I mean.

I would like to play MGS1 on a very low resolution with pixelated textures as it was on the PSX. I prefer that style over the more smooth graphics of the PC version.

If I'm not mistaken, Konami doesn't fully own the rights to that particular Metal Gear Solid remake - because it was a paid-for GameCube exclusive which also contained Nintendo cameo content, it's part-owned by Nintendo. It also occasionally floats around that possibly bits of it might also be with the developer, Silicon Knights.

At any rate, it seems that this might be why this version doesn't tend to get mentioned anymore, and has never been used as the basis for any re-releases or collections.

Disclaimer: Not a legal expert, this is simply as far as I know.

You're not the only one! After all, its comic-bookish visuals were designed around the target hardware and resolution. I always felt it looked weird when smoothed out, too.
