Frustratingly, SteamVR is currently just not working for me on Fedora KDE 38. When I load SteamVR it gives this error and the headset just flashes at me with no game output:

If anyone has any good tips to solve it I would love to read your thoughts in the comments as I want to get back into it with my Valve Index. Once the summer heat has died off a bit at least… Used to work well in games for the most part before this, but now I can't get it to work at all.

I get this error too sometimes but SteamVR works anyway.
One way to get rid of it I found is to delete ~/.steam/root/config/steamvr.vrsettings
Make sure you are on stable SteamVr the beta currently has problems.

Sadly that did not help in this case.

I've recently installed KDE. Have not tried VR yet because... 30 degrees in my room, but at some point I'll check if it still works. Always annoying when it randomly fails to work.

I recommend switching to X.Org, the SteamVR didn't worked for me in Wayland at all. You can do this on login screen just before login in the system.

For some reason you have to use both the Steam Beta and the SteamVR beta to get VR to work. You can't select any games from SteamVR, meaning you have to go to your desktop and launch the game everytime you wanna play something different, but it works (or atleast that's what worked for me).

any idea what the reason for this is? i thought Gnome was meant to be a first class wayland citizen. It seems more and more that KDE is beating out Gnome with new features.

Some very specific feature that VR needs. I suspect it might have been added by a Valve contractor as their upcoming standalone VR headset will probably run the same KDE based OS as the Steam Deck.

I really want to buy a VR headset this year, and I'm strongly leaning towards the Quest 3. But if Valve were to announce the Steam Deckard standalone VR headset and price it competitively with the Quest 3, I would be on it in a heartbeat.

It's a shame to see PCVR in the sorry state it's currently in; I think the Valve Deckard, if it even exists, will help to revive PCVR and SteamVR in particular. But it does need to be priced in the $500'ish range, and will it be ARM or x86 based? How will PC / Steam VR backwards compatibility work?

From the rumours so far it looks like it will be a hybrid, an ARM chip from Qualcomm to do all the inside out tracking, hand-tracking etc. and an Steam Deck like x86 chip to run the actual games on. While this sounds like a good technical solution, this also makes it relatively unlikely that it will be below $500.
