Vampire Survivors is getting a co-op mode

By -

Thought you were over your Vampire Survivors fix? Think again, they're adding in a whole new local co-op mode for the entire game.

Releasing August 17th as a free update it will let 4 people play together either through your current game or you can start a new adventure for it. It will also let you easily swap between playing alone or with others between stages. So you will be able to play through all of the content with others if you choose. They also said clearly it will work on Steam Deck, so for people docking it to a TV or monitor it could be a whole lot of fun.

In their FAQ post on Steam they made it clear that it's not split-screen, you'll all be there together on one screen and there will be a few gameplay adjustments. You will share the level ups, so you will take it in turns to level up and there's also going to be "a few ways to sabotage each other". It's local co-op only but they did say Steam Remote Play Together will work with it. You won't be able to pick the same character either, each player has to be a different one.

More updates are planned after this too, they're not done with it yet.

Vampire Survivors was already chaos enough with one person, I can't imagine what it's like with others, going to have to try it out for myself.

Available to buy on Steam. It is Steam Deck Verified and works great on desktop Linux with Proton too. It does have a Native Linux version in Beta but it's not really clear what they plan to do with it there.

This is something I didn't need. And I am worried, because I thought I had left my vampire survivors addiction behind. This summer I didn't want to open Vampire survivors again and again... But I'll have to. Really angry with poncle now. I wanted to have control over my free time again!

Welp, I bought it from Microsoft for the Play Anywhere, and it was before I knew of a native Linux version in the works too. At least my friends have it on Steam, and I can just remote play with them I guess. I'd have gotten it on Steam had I known better. This happens with games every now and then. You buy it on one storefront, only to later wish that you'd have gotten it on another instead. *sighs*

While it sucks to buy twice, you could think about getting it on Steam, too. Far from a perfect solution, but the game is on sale for something like 4$ every once in a while and it is a pretty good game.
That being said... while my experience with games on Linux is limited, I would never bet on Microsoft to make your life any easier. Vampire Survivors runs pretty well with Proton even on slower hardware and if there ever is a chance for a game to have a native version I recon your chances are much better going with Steam than with the MS Store.

My whole thing about buying some Play Anywhere games from Microsoft is basically to make my Xbox Series X less useless. It all depends on the game. If I want it on PC and it's Windows only, is single player or has cross-platform multiplayer, and is Play Anywhere. Then I get it from Microsoft. However, if it's got Remote Play Together on Steam, then that bypasses Play Anywhere. While on the other hand, native Linux support bypasses everything on PC, and I always try to get that version if I can. Though I find it annoying when some developers don't put their Linux (or 64-bit Mac) version on Steam or GOG, and leave it stuck on itch.io or something. 😑
