Ready to go back to the 90s? Keep an eye on FACEMINER, a simulation game about AI, surveillance and mass biometric data harvesting set in 1999.

Set against a backdrop of 90s techno-optimism, FACEMINER is an experimental, narrative-driven management sim that tasks the player with building a planetary scale biometric processing empire from scratch. All from within a suite of vintage software. The developer emailed to mention it will have full Native Linux support at release.

Features:

  • Detailed simulation of data centre operations; manage RAM, processing power, memory, cooling systems, software upgrades and more.
  • Keep track of the office gossip — and reveal the story of FACEMINER — through the lively internal messaging system.
  • Visualise your data center in 3D with the state-of-the-art (for 1999) ‘Visualiser’ tool.
  • Set within a painstakingly crafted tribute to everybody’s favourite vintage operating system.
  • Soundtrack comprised of true-to-period MIDI, dug up and restored from the deepest recesses of the internet.

From what the developer explained about it: "FACEMINER is the result of a research project examining the ecological impact of planetary-scale cloud computing, particularly when used for training AI models. The game incorporates exponential growth as a game mechanic to highlight the winner-takes-all nature of cloud computing, where datasets and the server farms housing them grow dramatically year-on-year in both their size and value.

The game is an exploration of how the simulation game format can be used to simplify a complex topic that covers surveillance, AI, and the deployment of physical infrastructure at extreme scales. The digital landscapes where these technologies are constructed, and the virtual clouds from which they are deployed, often obscure their connection to the physical realities of raw computational power. FACEMINER is an attempt to make these connections feel tangible."

I briefly misread "A.I. management sim" as "A.I. marriage sim" at first - thankfully the real game sounds more interesting and less strange than that!

I've read today that an animal shelter staged a marriage ceremony when they finally found someone willing to take a badly trained dog after several years.

Isn't there another game that's basically like this, right down to the retro-ness?
