A fresh Steam Beta update was put out for desktop and Steam Deck, it comes with a whole bunch of little bug fixes and improvements. Especially nice on desktop if you have AMD or Intel GPUs.

Pictured - Steam Big Picture Mode on Fedora KDE

Here's all that's changed for desktop Steam from July 6th:

General

  • Added playing a sound when displaying a notification toast in desktop mode.
  • In Big Picture mode, added playing a sound to some notification toasts where it was previously missing.
  • Fixed links not working in account creation and pre-login help dialogs.
  • Fixed windows sometimes not updating appearance when clicking maximize button.

In-Game Overlay

  • Fixed issue where viewing a user's profile was not working in some older games (e.g Left 4 Dead 2).
  • Fixed issue where the overlay was not responding to mouse input when there was a controller configuration loaded that included virtual menus.
  • Fixed an issue where the "Invite Friend to Game" dialog didn't work while in a Steam group voice chat channel.

Friends & Chat

  • Fixed minimize/maximize buttons not working for chat windows created minimized.

Linux

  • Add a setting to improve compatibility with window managers that send an unfocus event before every pointer click event, e.g. openbox. This setting can be found in "Settings->Interface->Enable context menu focus compatibility mode". Enabling this setting will fix dropdown menus being unclickable on these window managers.
  • Restrict a workaround that prevents a crash on Nvidia GPUs to only activate when we detect an Nvidia GPU. Side-effects for this workaround include window flashing and focus stealing when a steam window is closed, which should no longer affect Intel/AMD users.

As usual, the Steam Deck changes are basically the same, since this is a Steam Client update.

Is there a particular bug you're hoping to be solved soon? Or something you feel Steam is missing? Let me know in the comments box.

The notification spam on Steam Deck is really annoying.

Oh yeah that for sure, every time I go on there's loads. I don't want any of them lol.

YES! Glad to hear it! This one's annoying, because it also applies to notifications. Can't wait for this fix to leave beta.

The openbox issue was (and still is since I'm not using the beta version) very annoying.

Edit:

I want to be able to rotate the output of an external screen in game mode on the Deck.

I want to be able to modify the mango hud presets selectable by the … menu. I know that the current config is selected by an env variable that points to a config in /tmp on the Deck.

Edit 2:
Also on the SD: When I'm using the arrow keys (e.g. left) on the virtual keyboard in a Konsole window, it also sends a ^C which cancels the current command. That's very annoying. And it's still not possible to get a ctrl key.

Quotefocus stealing when a steam window is closed

I hope this includes the focus issue that Steam notifications (for instance if a friend is launching a game) steal focus temporarily.

Been a while since I decided on joining one of their beta updates this quickly, that focus stealing issue has been a real pain for me - and the update does deliver on fixing it.

Slow scrolling, the client dying without killing windows that can't be closed, still being unable to drag & drop in chat, and general client instability like having to retry downloads and cloud syncing 1,000,000 times,... and oh, open-sourcing the client. I am hoping that OpenSteamClient gains more attention.

At least they listen to feedback on the issue tracker, pretty happy the notification issue got solved.

I didn't know about OSC, I'm tired of the official Steam cliente since it's a resource hog. Do you know if the shader cache related things work? (state cache, fossilize) oh, I didn't notice the Shader management support part in the readme. :(

The problems i have with the steam client (desktop):

-60 FPS capped client. No way to remove the cap
-smooth scrolling is super slow in terms of how much the scroll moves. have to waste my scrollwheel a lot
-friends/buddy window doesnt remember its place on the second monitor on client start (it remembered fine with old UI)
-After 1-2 days of the client running VRAM usage grows without releasing it. client restart fixes it

Other than that the new UI is pretty neat. Text is a bit smaller on my 1440p screen which is nice also.

Don't know how it is on the deck, but the newfangled client has a whole section of the settings dedicated to notification finetuning.

I've all notifications disabled that can be, and haven't seen a single one cropping up since.

I feel every desktop app ought to implement a scroll sensitivity setting. The default feels way too low in a lot of apps, especially if your mouse wheel has a tendency to skip steps which is common on older mice.
