After it was leaked a bit too early, Valve have now confirmed and put up all three Steam Deck models to buy refurbished direct from the Steam store. On the official main Steam Deck website, if you scroll down a bit there's a new link leading to the Valve Certified Refurbished Steam Deck page where you can order one.
The confirmed pricing is:
- Steam Deck 64 GB - Certified Refurbished: $319 / £279
- Steam Deck 256 GB - Certified Refurbished: $419 / £369
- Steam Deck 512 GB - Certified Refurbished: $519 / £459
As noted by Valve, "Each Certified Refurbished Steam Deck has been thoroughly tested to the same high standards as our retail units. Every device goes through a complete factory reset, software update, and an extensive examination involving over 100 tests at one of Valve's facilities. Among the tests are all controller inputs, the audio system, the screen, and internals. Battery health is also assessed to ensure proper functionality and longevity.
All refurbished units meet or even exceed the performance standards of new retail units. Although they may have minor cosmetic blemishes, they provide a reliable, high-quality gaming experience at a lower cost."
They all include the same full one year warranty as a brand new Steam Deck, a refurbished power supply and carrying case. In the FAQ at the bottom Valve also notes that stock levels will come and go over time, as they are selected from customer returns that "pass rigorous criteria".
Additionally, GameStop announced they will also be selling refurbished Steam Decks, which are entirely separate to what Valve are doing available for GameStop Pro members only.

After thinking about it, the price is a bit steep for refurbs. If they were even $20 USD cheaper it'd make it a better looking deal.

Hmm. 2TB SSD from Amazon (cheapest is around £75) + refurb 64GB Steam Deck for around £350. Tempting? Maybe. Depends on the quality of the refurb by Valve, I guess. But I'm certainly interested in the idea.

I guess you get those exclusive goodies like the Profile Bundle for the 256GB one only when buying the New ones and not the Refurbished ones? At least i dont see those things mentioned.

Hmmm... that doesn't bode well that there are quantities of "refurbished" Steam Decks already.
1) People not happy and returning them
2) Returns of defective units, repaired.

I suppose so. It's the time frame that made me say that though, it doesn't seem that long ago that you'd be a lucky winner to be able to even get a Steam Deck.

If you're trying to get into PC gaming and are looking for a really dirt cheap entry price this could be a component of a really cheap build:
$319USD - Refub 64GB Steam Deck -
$25USD - 256GB SD card (eg: SanDisk 256GB Extreme)
$27USD - Bluetooth keyboard/mouse combo (eg: Logitech MK270R)
$25USD - USBC-HUB (eg: Anker 332)
$49USD - Bluetooth gamepad (eg: 8BitDo Pro 2)
$120USD - Cheap 27 inch 1080p monitor (eg: Acer KB272)
Can use the Steam Deck's speakers and mic for audio needs. At most you might need to add a small desk and a cheap chair if you don't already have one, but you have a setup which lets you play first person shooters at a desk with a mouse and keyboard, or play some racing games on a portable gaming system you can undock easily, or play some emulated console games on your TV for some couch gaming etc. All well supported and with good performance.
Bam, $565USD (plus taxes/delivery fees etc) and you have a great entry to PC gaming.
At $1149USD, it's less than half of the cost of a new RTX 4080!
And you could easily upgrade the setup later with a dedicated desktop gaming PC if you wish, upgrade the keyboard/mouse/monitor/etc, as you need/like, and the Steam Deck will always be still useful regardless.

I think this really will shake up the handheld space, particularly in the competition against Nintendo. This move by valve pushes the switch WAY BEYOND the saturation point even for the casual markets.

The refurbs are also from cancelled or returned items that may not have even been opened up.
Not uncommon. I would be interesting to know the exact amount of refurbs available.
Oh btw still not sold in AU/NZ directly, you gotta buy through 3rd party which ads like $100 to the pricetag (no joke)
