The free and open source video recording and livestreaming app OBS Studio is readying up another release, with OBS Studio 30.0 Beta 1 now available for testing.

You will also find the system requirements will be different with this release removing support for Ubuntu 20.04, Qt 5, and FFmpeg versions prior to 4.4. I'm especially interested to see this new YouTube Live Control Panel, for whenever I do a livestream as it sounds quite useful - although I've been unable to test this version as their .deb file provided doesn't seem to find the dependencies needed on Ubuntu 23.04.

In this version the new main additions are:

  • Added WHIP/WebRTC output.
    • With the introduction of WHIP, FTL is slated for removal in a release after May 2024.
  • Redesigned the status bar.
    • The redesigned status bar now provides the same information in a more organized and well structured way, with more representative and recognizable icons.
  • Added option for Full-Height docks to the "View" menu.
    • When enabled, a dock such as chat can take up the entire height of the OBS window.
  • Added support Intel QSV on Linux.
  • Added a shader cache to improve OBS startup time on Windows.
  • Added application audio capture on macOS.
  • Added a "Safe Mode" that runs OBS without third-party plugins, scripting, and websockets.
    • When OBS detects that it was not shut down properly it will offer the user the option to launch in Safe Mode for troubleshooting purposes. It can also be manually activated via the "Help" menu.
  • Reworked the virtual camera on macOS to work with all applications (on macOS 13 and newer).
  • Added a YouTube Live Control Panel when streaming to YouTube.
  • Added 10-bit capture support for Decklink devices.
  • Added HDR playback support for Decklink output.
  • Added an option to hide OBS windows from macOS Screen Capture's "Display Capture".

Main Changes:

  • Changed audio/video encoder dropdowns to be sorted by name.
  • Changed the list of applications in the macOS Screen Capture source to be sorted by name.
  • Added more accurate logging for Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling status and support.
  • Added the ability to arrange filters via drag & drop.
  • Enabled GPU scaling for "Rescale Output" when possible.
  • Clarified surround sound warning for YouTube 5.1 audio support.
  • Added warning if Lenovo Vantage is installed.
  • Added logging for scene changes in Studio Mode.
  • Changed Video Capture Device sources on Windows to not show an audio device in the Audio Mixer if none is available/selected.
  • Added support for grayscale MJPEG in V4L / DirectShow sources.
  • Improved settings interface of the "Text (FreeType 2)" source.
  • Added button to reactivate stopped capture in macOS Screen Capture.
  • Changed scene collection removal to retain a backup file (.bak) that can be easily reimported if needed.
  • Added IPv6 support for RTMP streaming output with IPv4 fallback ("happy eyeballs") for dual-stack streaming services. The preferred protocol can still be selected in advanced settings.
  • Fixed virtual camera output when used with additional output channels (e.g., Downstream Keyer plugin).
  • Added ability to set FFmpeg Options for VAAPI.
  • Added a Help menu item to view the Release Notes.

Plus there's plenty of the usual bug fixes too.

See all in the changelog.

Their Flathub package is the main means of distribution for Linux. They maintain it themselves. Did you try installing it that way? I really hope you're not one of those "never Flatpak ever!!" people...

I use the Flatpak for the stable version.

I wonder if Global Menu fix for Wayland cannot be handled on OBS side and would need to wait until Plasma 6. It's been quite annoying as the remux menu can't be accessed unless I force x11 for OBS so that it'd work with libdbusmenu and the Global Menu appears on my system.

That makes sense, but it's really easy to install betas and switch between beta and stable versions with Flatpak. You can keep them both installed and change which branch is active at any time.

I don't see anywhere that notes Flathub has a Beta branch for it?

You need to add the flathub-beta remote, and then:
❯ flatpak search com.obsproject.Studio
Name           Description                          Application ID              Version      Branch Remotes
OBS Studio     Live streaming and video recording … com.obsproject.Studio       29.1.0-beta4 master flathub-beta
OBS Studio     Live streaming and video recording … com.obsproject.Studio       30.0.0-beta2 beta   flathub-beta
OBS Studio     Live streaming and video recording … com.obsproject.Studio       29.1.3       stable flathub,flathub-user

Would be nice if Flathub actually mention the Beta stuff on app pages if the app in question has a Beta available <_<. Shouldn't have to hunt for these things.
