A small update for Proton Experimental launched on August 10th for Steam Deck and desktop Linux to fix issues with two problematic games. Valve launched a bigger update only a day ago so this is just cleaning up more issues.

Here's what's changed:

  • Disabled dxvk-nvapi for Rachet & Clank: Rift Apart to stop it from crashing on launch after a recent game update.
  • Fixed Street Fighter 6 causing GPU hangs.

You can see the changelog here.

How to change your Proton version:

Steam Deck:

  • Pick a game in your Library and head to the little cog icon on the right.
  • Click Properties, then Compatibility on the left.
  • Make sure the tickbox is done, then select Proton Experimental from the dropdown.

On a Linux desktop:

  • Right click a game, go to Properties.
  • Compatibility on the left.
  • Make sure the tickbox is done, then select Proton Experimental from the dropdown.

I didn't think Rachet and Clank even touched anything from NVAPI, did they start using it on the PC release for some reason?

Unless Proton can fix the really ugly art style...... Then it wont ever fix the biggest problem Street Fighter VI has......

How *is* Street Figher 6 running for you, people? For me, it was always barely playable. I know my gaming rig is very old now, but the game itself doesn't appear to be short on hardware power. When it runs, it runs well. The stability is just horrible.

The game has all kinds of NVIDIA tech, DLSS 2 & 3, Reflex etc. NVAPI is a requirement for DLSS 2 on Linux.
Unfortunately something broke with a game update. The game crashes now when NVAPI is visible and an NVIDIA GPU is used. Some smart people already looked into it, but nothing obvious came up. It's also perfectly possible that the crash isn't even related to DXVK-NVAPI, but rather something changed when the game wants to initialize NVIDIA specific things (which it tries only when NVAPI has been initialized successfully).

Perfectly sensible decision to update Proton Experimental for this game.
