Well this is quite fun to see. Amnesia: The Dark Descent has gained a Redux mod that rebuilds the graphics engine behind the game to provide Vulkan on Linux and DirectX 12 on Windows. It's not just adding it for the heck of it though, the developer said it will also correct some graphics issues in the original game while adding in new graphics options like HBAO+.

This is possible because Frictional Games opened up the source code for multiple of their games (GitHub). This particular Redux mod reworks the graphics using The Forge, a cross-platform rendering framework.

Don't expect perfection from the Redux mod just yet, as the developer said you can play it through but you may encounter some issues while they continue to improve it.

This is why open source is great. Anyone can come along and improve older games, give them a graphical boost and ensure they keep working long into the future.

Find the mod on itch.io and GitHub. You need to own a copy of the game to use it.

Not a fan of the genre but love seeing people do things like this. The more games using Vulkan the better.

If only more game developers would follow the examples set by the early id Software and the early Frictional Games, and release their source code...

I know that's just a pipe dream, however.

And nowadays, access to the source code isn't even required in order for developers to do visual upgrades or "remasters" like this.

Speaking of, someone should update the engines for the original games; Penumbra. Still need to get around to beating those...

Have to ask, Why bother adding DX12 if you've done Vulkan ?

Makes no sense to me .

Only thing I can think of is xbox maybe , no clue if it's on consoles or not.

Ha, it's true.

I have been looking at old hardware lately, and missed my Matrox Parhelia card... a card that came out as supporting DirectX 8.1... with some features for 9, but people expected a lot more, and by the time Doom 3 came out, the OpenGL was pretty well broken on the cards, so it couldn't run one of the most anticipated games. Was pretty much when Matrox left the gaming card industry. Their most successful gaming card was the G400 Max, which I think was only DirectX6 compliant. Wish someone would come into the game and actually push AMD/Nvidia aside as a contender... Intel keeps kind of flailing around with the ARC GPUs...
