We may see Counter-Strike 2 release next week

By -

Are you ready for the next generation competitive FPS from Valve? Well, next week you might be able to jump into Counter-Strike 2.

On X (Twitter), the official Counter-Strike account posted "What are you doing next Wednesday?" (September 27th), teasing that something is coming and it's not really hard to guess what that will be.

Likely either an open Beta of Counter-Strike 2 for anyone to jump in, or a proper release if they think it's ready enough. Hopefully Valve will also properly put up the Linux version too!

Valve said originally that CS2 would release in the Summer, but they've only done a Limited Test gradually inviting more players in so far. At release CS2 will be a free upgrade and replacement for Global Offensive, which is over 10 years old at this point so no doubt many are keen to see all the improvements.

Recently Valve also announced CS Rating — a precise display of your skill in Counter-Strike 2:

Quoting: heidi.wengerIt seems without an account you can't even read messages no more in that god awful "X"

It doesn't show the replies any more, but seeing the "base" message still works for me?

There might be quota so it doesn't even show tweets "x's" anymore when used up?
One thing I wonder about--if it's "X" now, what is this "twitter.com" website that has all the stuff on it?
Well,
Spoiler, click me
I guess if they switched it to "x.com" that would cause the apocalypse (or at least the Enemy Unknown).

I also noticed that when I went to have a look at the, um, "X" linked in this article, prominent to the right of the message was "New to Twitter? Sign up blah blah blah . . ." So it looks like I can't sign up to "X", only to Twitter . . .

It's probably because of A/B testing. The favorite test method of evil corporations to find out how far they can go in screwing their customers.
edit: style

They do own x.com sadly. But the core sharing mechanic still uses Twitter. I was laughing to see that Google doesn't acknowledge the name change either - they still show "trending from twitter" on their searches.

Honestly, I don't think anyone should ever actually name the service anymore. Just "this person announced on social media", and then screenshot the announcement. Job done. No having to say "this person on X (Twitter)" or decide which name to use.

Another Valve announcement that isn't for Half-Life 3.

That would be great, I just play casual bot deathmatch games these days and custom games in the server browser in cs:go like `surf_`.

As such even though I have hundreds of house I didn't qualify for the beta invite.

(lets face it, during the early years too of csgo and dota the last thing I wanted to deal with was the game crashing and then the matchmaking system harassing me because I "left a match" and penalizing me for internet issues, power outages, or crashes due to general buginess.)

I hope they greatly expand their invite, it should be interesting.

I also hope that there are a decent amount of DeathMatch Surfing maps in the Custom Server Browser, I particularly miss the RPG of CS:S and CS 1.6 -- csgo surf is meh -_-

Edit: On a side note, I hope this also leads to the release of the Source 2 Engine so we can see mods update to the new engine from 2013.
