Along with the newer Raspberry Pi 5, there's also now the release of the latest upgraded version of the Raspberry Pi OS based on Debian 12 'Bookworm' giving you a big bump to various software included. While the main OS upgrade won't affect too much, there's a lot of other changes inside this Raspberry Pi OS release to be aware of that their team has been working on to see their debut in this release.
Some of the big changes includes the move to using Wayland with Wayfire, which should look mostly the same but the tech under the hood is completely different. With this they also added a small amount of eye-candy like window shadows, window open / close animations and more. There's also the Power plugin enabled by default, along with a new GPU plugin similar to the existing CPU plugin to show system load but that's not on by default.
PulseAudio has been replaced with the newer PipeWire, NetworkManager as the default which brings more functionality like finding hidden wireless networks, VPN support and more. You'll also get a a "Raspberry Pi-optimised" version of Mozilla Firefox, that brings with it enabled V4L2 codec support for better video performance, support for Widevine DRM for video streaming services and work on enabling cameras for video calling.
Sounds like a rather nice upgrade!

For me, this, together with the better pi5 performance, basically means that I can stop complaining about how lenovo's keyboards are getting worse and worse and go for a tex shinobi with pi5, power bank, and portable screen when my good old t420 dies.

-- which I'm really happy to see, because I'd like to see wayfire & labwc gain some more traction. Wayfire is like a compiz clone for wayland; & labwc does something similar with openbox. Compiz has a bunch of pretty useful plugins, which they've also ported, alongside all the silly wobbly windows & such. I wonder how they work on the RPi.
I built wayfire earlier today on fedora; & it's quite a bit more stable than last time I tried (nevertheless that was on intel integrated graphics; now it's on an amd gpu; not sure if that would make much of a difference though.)

Now I feel that I should not have bought the Star Lite V, and instead getting a cheap portable monitor to connect to the Steam Deck to use it as a laptop when travelling...

But as far I can see the Pi5 has only HEVC Decode in Hardware. So it helps nothing with youtube (h264, VP9, AV1) or any other Video Platform. So Video decode is still on the CPU and all above FullHD will not be smooth
