Coming around the 5 year anniversary, DUSK HD is going to be a big full visual remaster of the very popular shooter so here's what they've said about it.

It's a free update that will update everything including enemies, weapons, all models, textures — everything they say will be improved. Around Halloween we can expect to get a trailer showcasing an on / off comparison, with a full launch along with their modding SDK and Steam Workshop support around the 5 year anniversary which would be December 10th.

The good news is that it will be entirely optional as the HD content will be available via the Steam Workshop as free downloads so you can keep it as it is if you prefer it. You'll be able to use the old or new HD assets for modding too and upload your own creations.

I wonder how they'll approach putting the new content on GOG, or if they will?

Just like any other optional DLC you can find on GOG, I presume. Just download the DLC and install on top of the base game. Or use a client that handles this for you.

I wonder if the scary sections look more or less scary now.

... and yes, the lower-res it gets, the more eerie & disturbing it looks in certain sections; I'm not kidding.

Hard agree. Even the hooded chainsaw dudes at the start look a lot goofier now that we're getting a better look at them.

Those new graphics don't work nearly as well as the original lo-fi look.

As an aside, I remember the 5th anniversary of Quake 1 and how that felt like eons have passed. In that timeframe we got Q2, Q3, the many Quake expansions, Dooom 3 was in the works, the many games based on idTech in general, Wolfenstein got a revival after the eternity that was... 8-9 years etc.

And they're saying Dusk didn't release just last month? Time is terrifying.

I agree, but I feel that this move may attract some new folk to the genre. Ones that never played doom or quake and was dodging it because of the dated graphics and stuff. Just because it looks old it may be considered as lame. Also, let's not forget that texturepacks are all the rage usually. If this modding option will be accessible, then modders will deliver in spades and more people will be exposed to the game. So I think it's an awesome move overall, despite my purist stance on the old-timey-looks front.
